For #BlackHistoryMonth pharmaceutical #chemist Alice Ball (1892-1916) who developed 1st effective treatment for #leprosy. Though her life was cut tragically short, her research saved 1000s from exile & painful, ineffective lifelong treatment for leprosy, & she was a trailblazer for women & Black scientists.

Ball studied #chemistry at UW earning a BSc & 2nd degree in pharmacy 2 years later. 🧵1/n

An extraordinary American astronaut and science communicator for #BlackHistoryMonth: Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is a physician who became the first Black woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour for NASA, on September 12, 1992. She also has a B.S. in chemical engineering, served in the Peace Corps, is a dancer and choreographer, formed and runs her 🧵

This #BlackHistoryMonth let’s celebrate trailblazing American #biochemist Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in #chemistry in the US! She made important research contributions to the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & our knowledge of the chemistry of histones & protein synthesis. She published original research establishing that “no bases other than adenine, 🧵

It’s #BlackHistoryMonth so it’s a good time to celebrate the extraordinary mathematician and NASA scientist Katherine Johnson (née Coleman; August 26, 1918 – February 24, 2020). One of the first Black women employed as a NASA scientist (and its predecessor NACA), she was known for her mastery of complex manual calculations of orbital mechanics and played a pivotal role in the success of 🧵

For the #Spacetober prompt lift-off: it’s my portrait of #mathematician and NASA scientist Katherine Johnson (née Coleman; 1918-2020). One of the first Black women employed as a NASA scientist (and its predecessor NACA), she was known for her mastery of complex manual calculations of orbital mechanics and played a pivotal role in the success of the US crewed spaceflights from the beginning. 🧵1/n

Happy birthday to #mathematician & geodesist Gladys West (née Brown in 1930)! Shown with satellite tracks & 3 satellites important to her career: Seasat, GEOS-3 & a GPS satellite. Her work, using math to precisely model the shape of Earth, laid the groundwork for GPS! Born to sharecropper parents in Virginia, she graduated with a Math BSc in ‘52 then MSc at VSU in ‘55. 🧵1/n

Am sure I’m missing many..feel free to add. 😀

Also #MetaText appears to be a better #iOS mobile app until the official app is updated. Otherwise, the desktop web has the best GUI, imo.

Hashtags appear to be the best way to find people by topic, interest etc. Glad to see familiar AND new faces! 😀👋🏽
