James Akers<p>I made my Mirror World class some bling out of 6mm glass tubulation. We can all laugh and be shiny together now. I actually didn't make myself one though. I guess I can make it tomorrow. I bent it to my handwriting in cursive with a 6mm sharpie :) . lol happened to be an easy an fun 3 letter phrase that flows nicely. </p><p>I sure do love mirroring a bunch of little tubes simultaneously :)</p><p>I gotta get a few feet of bright colored silicone or latex tubing. They are meant to be necklaces. They may be fragile during hugs.</p><p>Its been nice to teach these classes with Kacie Lees in the evenings and decompress from the hectic week finishing up neon work things ahead of an upcoming midwest road trip! Class and show in Minneapolis and visiting artist 2 day at UW, Madison. </p><p>We mirrored so much. Its so fun seeing people get it- and run wild with it.</p><p><a href="https://expressional.social/tags/glass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glass</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/flameworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flameworking</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/silver" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>silver</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/mirror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mirror</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/class" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>class</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/teaching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>teaching</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/gifts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gifts</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/students" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>students</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/jewelry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jewelry</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/brooklyn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>brooklyn</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/minneapolis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>minneapolis</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/nyc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nyc</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/Wisconsin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wisconsin</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/Madison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Madison</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/handmade" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>handmade</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/chemistry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chemistry</span></a></p>

This Sunday involved a wonderful tour around the workrooms of Noble Signs, which doubles as a museum. The founders started collecting the old signs they were replacing signs, then shifted to reclaiming and storing. They are now building the museum as a charity. They gave a tour today which was wonderful. They specislise in NY vernacular signs. A few photographs for you. I took many, i'll write several posts each with slightly different angles

I finally made a super sour loaf! Bread 15B came from a stiff (acetic acid) starter and sat in the fridge for about a week with a bunch of time out of the fridge to age an have its delicious bacteria from just right. I added olives an pecans to it with wheat germ around the outside. The bread is flavorful enough to hold it's own against the olives!

Though I would also share some work projects- the "No 79" is going to some fancy Manhattan development and will be outside, with housings. Should look good- and with 3 bars on the ground floor of this new residential building, I may actually go see my work when it's installed an have a drink :) Big ruby numbers- it WILL be seen.
All that and the "ANCY"- a test for this new Spielberg movie was 1 days work (along with some email sending). Feels good to put in a full days work an be able to share with you all :)

Show coming up + commercial neon + 3 upcoming classes = oh dear I am busy.

I did make a crackle tube this week with Kacie Lees- such fun! We decided to make the upcoming crackle tube class on April 19th an 20th a Bring Your Own Glass - BYOG - to smash and put inside a tube :). The recycled aspect makes the final tube more interesting and its also just fun to smash glass every now an then. With a community of students and glass professionals- Urbanglass has some really interesting glass trash to smash.

I made a few gifs of the crackle tubes as photos can't really capture the frenetic nature of a tight fill. I also added a gif of Kacie attaching an electrode on the topo chico seltzer bottle krypton crackle tube I made. The topo bottles I smashed had enameled labels so they hold up to the heating needed to purify the glass.

What a fun an busy week. I managed to stuff the doodle I coated and pulled myself into an acrylic box with paracord. I think I could use a larger box in most areas... and a slightly different box design... But I am certainly excited about putting more doodles in boxes and making them way less fragile.

I also baked a few breads. I am currently on bread 14. Here is a photo of bread 12 (top with additives) and bread 13.5 (second bread of a kilogram flour starter mass) also with the same cashews an olives.
With bread 13, I have begun noticing my liquid starter will be all floating about 12 hours after I feed it on a good day. So for bread 13 I caught it at one of these moments of peak ripeness before inoculating the bread dough with it. I also have been going in the fridge at night and taking it out during the day for two days. The added time added to the bread's fluffyness an rise.

What caught my eye in this Brooklyn scene? The contrast of repeating elements paired with eye-catching details like the Clock Tower and that bold red-and-white water tower. It’s the little things that make architecture and cityscapes so fascinating!

What kinds of details catch your eye when out and about?

I was applying for a lil Art show that goes in conjunction with a Texas glass conference I am presenting at later this year when I realized that I dont actually have any edited photos of the Big Cobalt Sunset Eclipse Sphere I made last year.

A few minutes in GIMP fixed that. Here are two that make it look a little rounder than it really is.

Doubtful that they will have the shipping budget... but also doubtful that they will be able to find something quite like it. Who knows, a Fort Worth business might really like it? The piece is inspired by the eclipse that want through there last year... and those beautiful Texas Sunsets.

This piece can currently be seen (partially) LIVE at this link

As part of a server sculpture I am actively developing for an upcoming show.

Long Island, Manhattan, the Hudson Valley are all inundated in the New York State #Petrofuture — 66m sea level rise on a 1956 Shell Oil map.

Rising seas on top of petro corporation propaganda…These maps are a subversion of advertising and nostalgia.
