Budapest, 1970. A rather distinctive 'stadium' shaped building in Budapest's III district, Óbuda. At this time silk buttons were made here, although it looks also like a residential building. Today it houses the Hungarian Wine Academy.

Budapest, 1955. Not generally known, but the creation of Budapest as a single city in 1873 was the union of three cities, not two: Pest, Buda, and Óbuda, or old Buda in English. Located to the north of Buda along the Danube, Óbuda was where the Romans settled at around 41 AD. You can still visit the ruins of their site today in what is known as Aquincum.

#GeoHoussar, a geopolitical analyst known for his in-depth commentary on international affairs, just released a damning breakdown of the Trump-Zelensky-Vance meeting, exposing its blatant disregard for #Ukraine’s sovereignty and U.S. commitments.

#Trump and #Vance tried to strong-arm #Zelensky into signing a deal that would not only force a ceasefire but also hand over #Ukraine’s mineral rights. Zelensky, standing firm, reminded them that #Russia has repeatedly violated past #ceasefires and that Ukraine was promised protection under the 1994 #Budapest Memorandum—a promise the U.S. is now failing to uphold.

Trump, rather than addressing these concerns, went on a bizarre rant defending Putin, calling the Russia investigation a hoax and suggesting that Putin had been treated unfairly. The meeting ended with an implicit threat: Sign the deal or the U.S. walks away.

This is a direct betrayal of international law and a win for Putin’s agenda. The U.S. is turning its back on Ukraine, despite promises and obligations. If this is the future of American foreign policy, then democracy and global stability are at serious risk.

Budapest, 1955. Gül Baba Street is one of the steeper places in Budapest. It's named after the poet and companion of Suleiman I ('The Magnificent') who defeated Hungary in 1526 and conquered Buda in 1541. Gül Baba died the same year and was buried near this street. His tomb has recently been renovated by the Turkish and Hungarian governments and officially re-opened by both Orbán and Erdoğan in 2018.

Budapest, 1945. It's the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Jewish Ghetto in Budapest by Soviet troops. The ghetto was completely cut off from the outside world. No food was allowed in, garbage was not collected, and dead bodies were piled up on the streets. Thousands died of cold, disease, and starvation. The liberation of Budapest was complete on 13 February.

Budapest, 1971. People often criticise the large housing estates of the Soviet era countries like Hungary. But what they don't see is the aging, run-down, energy inefficient housing stock it replaced which was incapable of housing a growing, increasingly prosperous and urban population.

Seit Juni sitzt Antifaschist:in Maja T. in #Budapest in Untersuchungshaft. Der nonbinären Person wird vorgeworfen, Neonazis angegriffen zu haben. Ein faires Verfahren ist nicht in Aussicht.

"«Die Versorgung mit Lebensmitteln ist mangelhaft. Hygienische Produkte wurden mir vorenthalten. Es ist teilweise dreckig, es gibt unzählige Bettwanzen und Kakerlaken.»

Ausserdem berichtete Maja T. über die konstante Überwachung und besondere Sicherheitsmassnahmen: «In meiner Zelle ist eine Videokamera, die ununterbrochen angeschaltet ist. Zudem musste ich mich eigentlich jeden Tag komplett vor Beamten entkleiden, also Intimdurchsuchung, obwohl ich zu niemand anders physischen Kontakt habe.»

«Maja befindet sich jetzt fast ein Jahr in Untersuchungshaft und seit mehreren Monaten in einer kameraüberwachten Isolationshaft in Budapest.» Ende Oktober hätten die ungarischen Behörden die Haft unter diesen Bedingungen um zwei Monate verlängert, ohne einen Gerichtstermin festzusetzen. «Die Perspektivlosigkeit dieser Kerkerhaft ohne Urteil kann nur als Willkür bezeichnet werden.»..."

Budapest, 1954. Still England's largest loss in international football, 7-1 to Hungary in Budapest. The Hungarian goal scorers - Puskas, Hidegkuti and Kocsis, are the equivalent of All Blacks such Meads, Kirkpatrick, and Clarke - absolute legends of the game. The sole English scorer, Ivor Broadis, died in 2019 aged 96 - the oldest English international football player at that time.
