Established in 1918, it is one of the island's oldest forest reserves, dedicated to preserving diverse ecosystems, including mangrove forests, limestone cliffs, and coastal areas. ​ The forest is renowned for its rich biodiversity. It encompasses various marine biomes such as coral reefs and seagrass meadows, which are crucial habitats for species like the West Indian manatee. All four species of mangroves found in Puerto Rico thrive here, alongside plant species like the bullet tree, greenheart, and sea grape. Notably, the forest provides sanctuary to endangered species, including the black cóbana and the critically endangered bariaco. The beaches within the forest serve as vital nesting sites for leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea turtles. “If the Cubans are not there, we may not be able to run the service,” he said. “I will prefer to lose my visa than to have 60 poor and working people die.”

And last week, Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith told reporters her government views Cuban medics as vital.

“Their presence here is of importance to our healthcare system,” she said. There are 400 Cuban doctors, nurses and medical technicians currently working in the country.

This week, #Barbados’s Prime Minister Mia Mottley gave a fiery address to parliament, calling the US stance “unfair and unjustified”.

“We could not get through the pandemic without the Cuban nurses and the Cuban doctors,” she said.

Trinidad and Tobago’s prime minister, Keith Rowley, warned that US interference in #Caribbean healthcare decisions was unacceptable.

Caribbean leaders have hit back at a threat issued by the United States government to cancel visas for anyone working with or supporting Cuban medical facilities, citing allegations of forced labour and claiming these missions “enrich the Cuban regime”.

Cuban medical missions, which provide doctors, nurses and other medical staff as well as medical facilities, are critical to healthcare systems in the Caribbean.

One of the first seven villages founded by the Spaniards in Cuba, Camagüey played a prominent role as the urban centre of an inland territory dedicated to cattle breeding and the sugar industry. Settled in its current location in 1528, the town developed on the basis of an irregular urban pattern that contains a system of large and minor squares, serpentine streets, alleys and irregular urban blocks, highly exceptional for Latin American colonial towns located in plain territories. The 54 ha Historic Centre of Camagüey constitutes an exceptional example of a traditional urban settlement relatively isolated from main trade routes. The Spanish colonizers followed medieval European influences in terms of urban layout and traditional construction techniques brought to the Americas by their masons and construction masters. The property reflects the influence of numerous styles through the ages: neoclassical, eclectic, Art Deco, Neo-colonial as well as some Art Nouveau and rationalism. Dra. Andrea Evangelina Rodríguez, the first female physician in the Dominican Republic.

She dedicated her career to providing medical services to poor communities in the south of the DR. These included sex education in schools and pre- and post-natal OB/GYN services. Through her activism, she highlighted societal issues re race, gender, and class, and protested against the human rights crimes committed under Dictator Rafael Trujillo’s regime.
