Happy I Love Free Software Day! 💕

Unfortunately, this year I could not join nor organize any in-person celebration, BUT of course I want to share my gratitude to the many, countless #FreeSoftware services I don’t merely use, but actually depend on.

Last year, I decided to focus only on #YunoHost, because it would have been crazy to list all the projects I use and I love.

This time, even if I will most certainly forget someone, I am challenging myself to mention all the #LibreSoftware my life is powered by.

Without further ado, THANK YOU to:

  • @yunohost, for powering Nebuchadnezzar
  • @fedora, for running my beloved #Framework laptop
  • @frameworkcomputer, for designing and building repairable, #Linux-friendly and truly open hardware
  • @gnome and @GTK, for being just gorgeous
  • @calyxos (thus @LineageOS), for powering my #Fairphone5
  • #Obtainium, for making me directly download apps on my phone, and @fdroidorg for distributing them
  • #AuroraStore, for proxying the download of apps I am doomed to get from Google Play
  • @element, for developing #Synapse, even though the new proprietary Synapse Pro is VERY PROBLEMATIC AND DISAPPOINTING
  • #Fractal, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Matrix client ever
  • @signalapp, for keeping me connected with the people I love
  • @Mastodon, for also maintaining a feature-packed experimental fork (#GlitchSoc), that is what Pan runs
  • #Tuba and #Moshidon, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Mastodon clients ever
  • #Firefox, for still remaining the best possible #browser choice, despite #Mozilla’s governance messiness
  • @openstreetmap, for allowing us to find the right path, both literally and metaphorically!
  • @organicmaps, for being the simplest, cleanest, yet feature-rich #OSM client and navigation app
  • @protonvpn, for making me browse safely from/to anywhere in the planet and @protonprivacy #ProtonMail, for hosting my email, despite the latest alarming political statements…
  • @libreoffice, for allowing me to draft documents with ease, the last of which was my #CV
  • #LanguageTool, for preventing me from making embarassing spelling mistakes
  • @photoprism, for safely storing and indexing all my photographic memories, on Aby, and for providing stellar and friendly support too!
  • #Actual, for moderating the very likely risk of ending up completely broke, since it forces me to manage my finances consciously and coherently
  • @readeck, for storing and sorting ALL my varied and overwhelming inputs
  • @nextcloud, for storing and synchronizing my data, for its #calendar, its #tasks, and all its awesome apps
  • #Rustdesk, for preventing my friends and family members from going crazy, by allowing me to remotely connect to their devices and directly address the issues they have
  • #Listmonk, for sending out my newsletter
  • @eleventy, for powering all the websites I maintain, above all the virtual representation of my mind, and for being the only reason why I resist and try to continue learning #JavaScript
  • @forgejo, for giving us a chance to truly control and collectively develop the sources of our software, but most importantly @Codeberg, for RESISTING, RESISTING, RESISTING, despite the hatred and attacks nazi assholes throw at them
  • @musicbrainz for keeping music knowledge open and free, and @ListenBrainz for scrobbling the crazy music I listen to
  • The @fsfe, for promoting this celebration and fighting the good fight!

Lastly, but most importantly, the biggest thank you goes to all the free software libraries and dependencies the above mentioned #software are made of/built with, including #C, #JavaScript, #Python, #Rust, and all community-maintained programming languages.

I am super sorry if I forgot someone!

I have looked everywhere, but I can't find this post from 11 February! It isn't showing up in my Sent timeline. So if it is on my profile, and/or if you have seen it, I apologise.

I am not closing my account here, but I need to try something other than Friendica, due to accessibility issues. I am considering Akkoma, but am open to other networks if they are compatible with Mastodon.

I am seeking an instance with the following specifications.

Accessible interface (I use a screen reader called NVDA). If it uses Semantic html and isn't cluttered, that's a great start. I would prefer it to be compatible with Mastodon so that I could also use TweeseCake as a client. I need to easily be able to access things such as notifications, follow requests, my own posts, to be able to search for tags, people, my posts etc.

Posting limit of 5,000 characters or more (more preferred.

Ability to pin, unpin, edit, and delete posts.

Ability to filter content, so that I don't see certain words or phrases. (This doesn't work with TweeseCake, so it's not as important as the rest, unless the site is so accessible that I can use it often.)

Ability to select between seeing all posts of someone or only some, and to choose whether to let someone follow me without my seeing his posts or to follow him completely. (Friend versus Subscriber on Friendica).

Extensive profile with keywords. (Keywords may be a Friendica feature, so can be skipped.)

Most people write in English and are not politically, technologically, or gaming obsessed. No radicals of any pursuasion. (the English bit is just to help me find friends on my particular instance.)

Free speech (nothing illegal or homophobic). I personally avoid obscenities.)

If such an instance exists, please tell me. I found https://akkoma.fediverse.observer/list[7] but that's just a list with no real information about each instance. I would have to go through over 400 of them, choose the ones from the UK, Canada, and America (they're the most likely to have English instances), then go through those to see if they meet my requirements, but that's ridiculous.

I am not a programmer, so please don't suggest I start my own instance or join a network that is not set up with a webpage and/or to accept a client, as I know nothing about these things other than that they run on Linux and I'm a Windows user. I just want something that works. Also, if there are any demonstration instances, please let me know. I heard of one where accounts only lasted five days, but it seems to be gone.

akkoma.fediverse.observerFediverse Observer checks all servers in the fediverse and gives you an easy way to find a home.Akkoma Servers Status. Find a Akkoma server to sign up for, find one close to you!

... and I'm back, via the "web".

Had dinner, watched some weirdass WarHammer 40k stuff on the toob and sat down and had an "ah, how about..." moment ("maybe this needs something like a make clean").

Now #GlitchSoc enabled... not quite sure what that means in entirety yet, just gotta try these things innit.

I was trying to sorta blindly follow the instructions here: glitch-soc.github.io/docs/

To "upgrade" from vanilla Mastodon, which I run as "software" (as opposed to "Docker") checked out using git... I hit 3, well perhaps 2, issues:

  1. The 'git' command sequence given doesn't work for me, I needed the below instead of: git checkout glitch-soc/main

git checkout -b glitch
git branch --set-upstream-to=glitch-soc/main glitch
git pull

This is may be because I have an older git version on my Debian 12.9 VPS? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@msdropbear42 Ha, possibly somewhat ironic, atm i find myself giving #phanpy another try, albeit this time using my #infosecexchange Masto account not one of my #Friendica ones. My motivation this time is to discover if Phanpy might avoid, or solve, the current bug that annoys me in the Masto #AdvancedWebInterface view, in which the recent version update of Masto seems to have partly broken one of the important #GlitchSoc features i like [the Notifications icon's Unread icon does not clear unless i reload the page, thus forcibly losing my reading place in the various timeline columns if not already at the top].

So far i'm trying to re-acclimatise myself to the many differences of form & function of my created multi-column view in Phanpy, compared to AWI in Masto. I can see various things i quite like, but one issue might be a showstopper; despite me deliberately keeping the auto-reload option disabled in P's Settings, my timeline columns still seem to auto-reload... i truly hate this stupid function, in Masto & here too if i can't defeat it; it's a major disrupter when reading down the timelines. Hopefully i can find a way around it, coz otherwise Phanpy seems like a really clever product from its obviously talented Dev.

@BruceC01 #Friendica's UI does indeed provide a triffic icon-based tool for rich-text formatting chosen text, & also then previewing it. However fyi, for various reasons, a month or two ago i returned to my primary Masto instance, so all my toots you've seen recently have come from Masto not Friendica. All recent Masto s/w versions have the capability to display formatted fonts, but [ridiculously, IMO] still cannot actually create said formatting when peeps draft their toots. However, those Masto instances, like mine, which use the glitch.soc #GlitchSoc fork of Masto, whilst still having no preview capability, can at least create the formatting, which everyone can subsequently see. To do this, whilst far less convenient than Friendica's graphical tool, we use standard Markup language, eg, enclosing words to be italicised within single asterisks, bold with double asterisks, bold italic with triples, quotes with single right-arrow, etc.
