One of the massive pumps that kept the Samson Pit in #SanktAndreasberg - once the deepest mine in the world - free of water.

Since learning more about historical #mining , I have come to the conclusion that the typical "old mine" dungeon complex in #DnD and other #ttrpg don't give enough thought on how to keep the water out.

Leute aus dem Harz hier oder Leute die sich da auskennen?

Suchen gerade für ein verlängertes Wochenende einen Ort der ein wenig Abseits der Wege ist aber mit ÖPNV bedingt erreichbar. Wir sind Fußgänger ohne Führerschein.

Bisher finden wir nur Unterkünfte die ein Auto zwingend voraussetzen weil der nächste Ort mit Supermarkt mehr als 10 Km weg ist.

I have visited the #Harz mountains three times in the last few years. The region is still reeling from droughts and bark beetle plagues which destroyed more than 90% of its vast fir trees, and the landscape often looks desolate.

But to me, the region is also a symbol of #resilience . Yes, the old monocultures are gone - but new growth is already emerging. And in a few decades there will be new forests - different from the ones that had been planted before, but likely better able to withstand future environmental disasters. Nature always finds a way, one way or another, and there is always hope for a better future.

A good lesson for us all.
