BedastGPT<p>The thing to keep in mind about Large Language Models (LLMs, what people refer to as AI, currently) is even though human knowledge in the form of language is fed into them for their training, they are only storing statistical models of language, not the actual human knowledge. Their responses are constructed from statistical analysis of context of prior language used.</p><p>Any appearance of knowledge is pure coincidence. Even on the most “advanced” models.</p><p>Language is how we convey knowledge, not the knowledge itself. This is why a language model can never actually know anything.</p><p>And this is why they’re so easy to manipulate into conveying objectively false information, in some cases, maliciously so. ChatGPT and all the other big vendors do manipulate their models, and yes, in part, with malice.</p><p><a href="https://beige.party/tags/LargeLanguageModels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LargeLanguageModels</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/LLM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLM</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/NotAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NotAI</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/ChatGPT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChatGPT</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/ChatGPTIsNotAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChatGPTIsNotAI</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/MaliciousAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MaliciousAI</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/NotIntelligent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NotIntelligent</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/ArtificialIntelligence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArtificialIntelligence</span></a></p>

Dave Howcroft<p>I for my part have been somewhat dismissive of <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LargeLanguageModels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LargeLanguageModels</span></a> for text generation because I prioritise having explicit control over what generated text is supposed to express, even going so far as to brand <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TextGeneration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TextGeneration</span></a> from <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LLM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLM</span></a>/s as <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NeuralBabble" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NeuralBabble</span></a> since it's simply sampling likely continuations from a big model of word distributions. I think others in the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NLG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NLG</span></a>/#NaturalLanguageGeneration community have reacted similarly at times.</p>
Dave Howcroft<p>For example, if I say "the bird in the hand" then you, given a certain familiarity with English idioms, will mentally autocomplete "is worth two in the bush". These <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LargeLanguageModels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LargeLanguageModels</span></a> are used similarly, where you provide an initial prompt and the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LLM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLM</span></a> auto-completes the text. It's not quite the same as data-to-text <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NLG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NLG</span></a> with semantic or other control of the input, but the texts often read like something that *might* have been written by a human.</p>
