I took a stab at cleaning up my code for BearExporter, a Python script to export all of your Bear notes to Markdown files you can use with Obsidian, read in the terminal, or whatever.

As the old saying goes "it works for me!" but I know it's not exactly great code, but it is available.

I'm not great at Python but I'll try to improve it as time allows.

Every week I sit down to budget, and it starts by opening Safari with two windows I set up.

It finally clicked that I should automate this, so, here it is! A combination of AppleScript + Shortcuts and it's now one click in my Dock.

I show the AppleScript on the left so you can see it all. It checks for Safari running because launching Safari gets you a window automatically. Second picture is the result. (Two YNAB tabs because I have $ and € budgets.)

Interest in LibreOffice, the open-source alternative to Microsoft Office, is on the rise, with weekly downloads of its software package close to 1 million a week as users look to avoid subscription costs. That’s the highest download number since 2023. It works on Linux, macOS, Windows and Unix like systems. computerworld.com/article/3840

Wow! I can't believe the damage Apple has done to the macOS Photos app in Sequoia. Navigation is seriously broken; assigning faces is an exercise in frustration—it won't show faces until I add a face, and trying to position the circle too near the edge results in the circle resizing itself, and if the circle is along the bottom edge the name overlaps with the Explore control so I can't enter the name; searching doesn't show all results, and that's just what I've seen so far. JFC!

New Mac Attack is tricking Users into thinking their Computer is locked.

According to LayerX Labs, who have been tracking this campaign for more than a year, the phishing attack attempts to trick Mac users into thinking that their computers have been “locked” via a fake security warning that pops up while users are browsing the web.

Lazy question - and I will sift through a search engine too. Is anyone who uses a lot of #Apple products backing up to an external hard drive instead of #iCloud? Just wondering about the feasibility and difficulty of that. My phone is fine but laptop is an old model so can’t have the Advanced Data Protection function so wondering about the best course of action. Of course then my phone and laptop no longer sync. Wondering what’s best for my data protection. Advice welcome 🙏🏼

So, here's my actually-planned-for-this-year #MARCHintosh project. Attached is a photo of four very dusty containers full of floppy disks. These are the actual disks from my childhood IIfx!

Most of these disks aren't original. The originals lived at Dad's workplace. He would periodically bring home software from work, make a copy of the disks, and return the originals to work. These were, I'm told, the "off-site backups", in case there was a fire at the workplace or something like that. But we also had all this software installed on the family IIfx so Dad could read any files that he brought home from work with him.

Of course, we also bought our own software for the home, and those are mixed in with these disks as well. And that stack of CD-ROMs in the top left are my MacAddict cover disks - those are already archived.

Anyway, because these are just consumer-grade diskettes, they degrade quicker than the professionally-manufactured original ones. I've already lost a few, so I want to get these archived! And of course, anything that doesn't already exist on the Garden will be uploaded there and shared on #GlobalTalk as well.

(expect this to be a long-ass foone-style thread with lots of updates over several days)
