fc<p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/AlternateFridayMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AlternateFridayMusic</span></a> <br>Dec 6 2024 <br>The prompt is Yen</p><p>Pete Shelley, “Sky Yen”</p><p>We first met <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/PeteShelley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PeteShelley</span></a> as frontman of <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/PowerPop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PowerPop</span></a>-inflected <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/punk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>punk</span></a> band <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Buzzcocks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Buzzcocks</span></a>, and his <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/synthpop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>synthpop</span></a> solo work following their dissolution, but he was busy making sounds before any of that happened.</p><p>Recorded in 1974 on, as the jacket states “purpose-built oscillator,” Sky Yen was released in 1980 when Buzzcocks were perhaps at their commercial peak, it’s hard to imagine this being pressed and released under any other circumstances.</p><p>You’ll note I referred to this work as “sounds” rather than music; this work, recorded a year before <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/LoReed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LoReed</span></a>’s arguably more musical (really) <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/MetalMachineMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MetalMachineMusic</span></a> was released, challenges any definition of music, anticipating the <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/noise" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>noise</span></a> and <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/ambient" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ambient</span></a> genres. </p><p>I don’t expect anyone to sit through the entire length of the linked piece, but hop around a little to get a sense of the variety of sounds young Pete was no doubt annoying his parents with.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wNrYw6FeiY&t=467s" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=0wNrYw6Fei</span><span class="invisible">Y&t=467s</span></a></p>
