It has a lot of integrations too so it’s compatible in a way or another with a lot of readers out there. I also used <a class="hashtag" href="https://manganiello.social/tag/nextcloud" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Nextcloud</a> News in the past, but it was very slow, and since it doesn’t expose as many APIs as Miniflux it’s not compatible with many other clients.</p></li><li><p>The <a href="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/co.appreactor.news/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">News</a> app is my pick on Android. It isn’t very actively maintained, I’ve had to push a PR myself recently to fix some stuff, but it’s minimal, well-designed and fast. I also tried <a href="https://f-droid.org/en/packages/me.ash.reader/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Read You</a> for a bit, but although it’s much more polished and better maintained it’s also much slower at refreshing feeds.</p></li></ul>
Stefano Marinelli<p>Sometimes I am asked what the BSD Cafe is - what service of the BSD Cafe is considered the heart of it all. The BSD Cafe began its journey with the Mastodon instance, and other services gradually followed. For some, it might be the repository of their projects, while for others, it’s the Matrix room where they discuss their passions. For some, it’s the feed reader, for others, a way to know their IP address. There are those who see it as the sticker collected at EuroBSDCon or received by mail. For many, it serves as a base from which to start self-hosting their services on BSD systems, and it remains a gathering place among friends, a space to visit even if one doesn't primarily use it as a home.</p><p>Whatever it is for you, thank you. Because I am proud of the BSD Cafe, of what it has become, and of what it represents. In this place, I have forged relationships with people I already knew and met wonderful individuals who share their experiences, ideas, and passions in the true spirit of the BSD Cafe, which is to be positive and constructive. This way, we all grow, learning something new every day.</p><p>Whatever the BSD Cafe represents for you, I can tell you what it means to me: a group of friends, regular visitors or not, who exemplify that the world would be a much better place if the spirit adopted in all contexts were the same.</p><p>It’s late for <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/ThankYouTuesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ThankYouTuesday</span></a>, but I thank you all the same.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSDCafe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BSDCafe</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/ThankYou" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ThankYou</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Grateful" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Grateful</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Snac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Snac</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Matrix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Matrix</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Lemmy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lemmy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Forgejo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Forgejo</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/FreshRSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreshRSS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Miniflux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Miniflux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/MyIP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MyIP</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/DokuWiki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DokuWiki</span></a></p>

The reason why I’ve been using <a class="hashtag" href="https://manganiello.social/tag/miniflux" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Miniflux</a> for years is that it has half a dozen of supported Web clients, a couple of Android apps and even a terminal GUI like newsboat that all support it.</p><p><span class="h-card"><a class="u-url mention" href="https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>pluralistic</span></a></span></p>
Abhinav 🌏<p>I have been using Reeder on my laptop as my <a href="https://fantastic.earth/tags/feed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>feed</span></a> reader app backed by <a href="https://fantastic.earth/tags/Miniflux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Miniflux</span></a> for a while now. Recently, I found myself often clicking away from Reeder to the original <a href="https://fantastic.earth/tags/blog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blog</span></a> posts in the browser.</p><p>I realised that most of the blogs I follow do not need sanitisation as done by feed readers because they are usually well-designed and do not contain ads. In fact, some of them are great looking, and have their own unique looks. I noticed that I prefer reading them in the browser, in their full glory, with their different styles, instead of all of them looking same black-and-white minimal-styled text in the reading pane of Reeder.</p><p>So, I went out looking for a feed reader that manages subscriptions like usual, but instead of having it's own reading pane, opens the articles in a side-by-side browser pane. And I found NONE.</p><p>So I hacked my own using some custom CSS and JS added to the Miniflux UI. Learn about it in my latest note: <a href="https://notes.abhinavsarkar.net/2024/customizing-miniflux" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">notes.abhinavsarkar.net/2024/c</span><span class="invisible">ustomizing-miniflux</span></a></p><p><a href="https://fantastic.earth/tags/rss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rss</span></a> <a href="https://fantastic.earth/tags/software" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>software</span></a> <a href="https://fantastic.earth/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a></p>
Stefano Marinelli<p>🌟 Introducing BSD.cafe 🌟</p><p>Excited to present the first building block of the BSD Cafe project! When I registered this domain months ago, I envisioned a themed bar where we can casually chat about *BSD systems, Linux, and Open-Source technology among friends, acquaintances, and patrons. But like any bar, discussions can cover a wide range of topics while respecting everyone.</p><p>BSD.cafe will be a hub for various tools and services, powered by *BSD.</p><p>The first brick is a new Mastodon instance, a gateway to the Fediverse. Registration is open, and the server will be moderated under clear guidelines promoting good behavior and zero tolerance for hate towards anyone. Inclusivity, respect, and constructive dialogue are the key values of this new instance.</p><p>The main server is currently hosted in Finland on a small VM, based on <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/FreeBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreeBSD</span></a>. Services are divided into VNET jails, connected in a LAN via a local bridge. A VPN system is also present and have been able to move individual jails to different, more powerful, machines.</p><p>Multimedia data and cache are hosted on another physical server (FreeBSD, within a jail), with Cloudflare in front. The aim is to cache and geodistribute data, reducing network traffic on the main VPS.</p><p>Reverse proxy (frontend), mail server, media server, and the instance itself are reachable via <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/ipv6" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ipv6</span></a>.</p><p>The instance started empty. No unnecessary content was pre-loaded; I want it to grow organically based on users' interests and following. There won't be any preemptive blocks at this stage. Users are encouraged to promptly report anything they find worth flagging.</p><p>Join us at <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">mastodon.bsd.cafe</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> to build a constructive and inclusive community—a safe and relaxing space for everyone.</p><p>Our wiki, located at <a href="https://wiki.bsd.cafe" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">wiki.bsd.cafe</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>, features essential links and articles related to the BSD world. It provides an overview of the tools, services, rules, uptime, and more information about the BSD Cafe Services.</p><p>A Matrix server, a Miniflux RSS Reader, the Wiki itself, and the BlendIT Lemmy instance are all part of the BSD Cafe services, with more to come.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Community" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Community</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tech</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Networking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Networking</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Inclusivity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Inclusivity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/FreeBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreeBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/NetBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NetBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/DragonflyBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DragonflyBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OSS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SysAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdmin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Miniflux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Miniflux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/RSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Matrix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Matrix</span></a></p>
