The wild bergamot has started to grow back (and has finally submerged from under the snow) and the leaves already smell sooo good! I hope it blooms this year!

April 14, 2025. The honey berry shrubs started blooming. They bloom a few days after the pussy willow trees. The earliest flying pollinators will have natural food. Native plants with early blooms are good habitat. #minnesota, #zone4b, #pollinators, #growyourown, #nativeplants, #haskaps.

April 12, 2025. Where we are transplanting native plants while a snapping turtle deliberately walks south feet from my feet. These three Dwarf Blazing Stars were grown from seed in spring 2024. The flower spires will be about 12 inches tall. These little plants are not going to take over the world. #nativeplants, #minnesota, #zone4b, #growyourown, #pollinators

@Axiom Have fun with the research. Native plants are good for the planet! The local pollinators are looking for quality native plant meals from spring to fall. Fiber sprouts. Ha ha. #nativeplants, #growyourown.
One of my favorite flowers, the very ephemeral bloodroot, Sanginaria canadensis has made its appearance. Native to most of the eastern half of the US and southern Canada, it’s an early spring pollen and nectar source for native pollinators. The seeds are dispersed by ants.
April 9, afternoon in which we see two ants, one tree swallow and these lovely Prairie Smoke plants. #nativeplants, #treeswallows, #minnesota, #getoutside, #zone4b.
Evergreen huckleberries (Vaccinium ovatum) are blooming. This hardy native is evergreen, and used by wise people for hedges. Its blue huckleberries are very small but usually abundant, and tasty!

Would you believe me if I told you that this pretty, cheerful flower is bad news?
Lesser Celandine, which is blooming right now in the eastern US, spreads rampantly in damp areas, like these woods. Unfortunately these are the same areas where native spring ephemerals like Bluebell, Spring Beauty, and Trout Lilly should be speed-running their short above-ground lives before the trees start casting shade.
Guess what aggressive plant is choking them out?

I always enjoy hearing Great Horned Owls calling & even better—hearing 2 GHOs duetting! Here’s my Perpetual Journal art of 2 GHOs duetting, a Cooper’s Hawk, & a small Mexican Poppy plant.
Chaparral yucca (Hesperoyucca whipplei), Lakeview Mountains, Southern California, yesterday.
Hoaryleaf ceanothus (Ceanothus crassifolius, lilac family) -- Lakeview Mountains, Southern California, yesterday. These flowers have a very pleasant scent--something like a fresh cinnamon roll, to my mind.
First poppy to bloom this season, tacking into winds.
