(Post 2/2)

I am right now using @OrganicMaps because it's the only navigation app I have tried that loads the map almost instantly, doesn't lag, and has great support for on-foot and bicycle routing.

But the navigation options are very minimal (avoid unpaved roads, motorways, tolls etc). I'd like more options like detailed in the post above. Or being able to just press a button while on the bicycle to be navigated to the closest bike parking in one click.

New account, so new #introduction. Let's do it again!

I have a
#MastersDegree in #ComputerScience and #ComputerEngineering. I went to #NMU for undergrad and #MSU for my graduate degree. I currently work at #UChicago for the #TMWCenter, which focuses on helping young children acquire language (and therefore other learning skills) faster.

In my spare time, I develop
#OpenSourceSoftware such as
- a
#SphinxDoc extension that embed #Fediverse comments on your page
- a library to talk to
#ManifoldMarkets from native #Python
- a
#PredictionMarket manager using the above
- a
#transpiler from a subset of Python to #OpenStreetMaps's #OverpassQL
- bug fixes to many other projects, including
#mypy, #base58, #attrs, #CPython, & more

I spend a fair bit of my time these days on
#MathResearch, specifically into the #ThueMorse Sequence and its extensions.

I'm also a hobbyist editor on OpenStreetMap.

#Demisexual, #transfem, and happily engaged to my #enby sweetheart.

We have two cats:
#OpheTheLoaf and #MayalaranTheCat (yes, from #StormlightArchive) See here for more on them!

I speak English fluently, Spanish haltingly, and am trying to learn Chinese

Ophelia was originally my partner's, we live together full time now, and are an integrated family Fun facts about Ophelia: * She is missing a tooth, so her lip sometimes gets stuck open in a cute way * She has an "activation noise" that sounds kinda like a pigeon * She will often do 10/10 loafs, hence the nickname Some facts about Maya: * Her favorite hobby is judging the neighbors * She is very anxious * She has an incredibly dainty play style * She has a series of increasingly ridiculous nicknames: Mayalaran -> Maya -> Mayo -> Aioli -> Au Jus (Follow the hashtags if you want just my cats) #CatsOfMastodon #CatsOfFedi (📎8)

Get a NAS with #Docker support (like #TrueNAS. You can install web-services like @nextcloud which is a completely self hostable Google Drive/Google Docs replacement with addons to extend functionality.

#DuckDuckGo is currently the best search engine that isn't self hosted however #SearXNG is self hostable and very customisable.

#OSMAnd (customisable) or #OrganicMaps (straight forward) for Maps. Both use #OpenStreetMaps

#Android replacement, well Android. I personally recommend @calyxos which comes with an open source replacement to emulate Play Services called #MicroG

Although #Proton is technically a great service, CEO has come out as a Trump supporter so I'll leave that to your personal opinon. Another good service is @Tutanota

I've just downloaded osmand.net and turned off Quisling Maps on my phone. I'll test the navigation over the next week or so.

For planning trips with an #ElectricCar, I like plugshare.com. It will let you add charging stations and gas stations to your route. It will show all of the different networks in one map, which is a huge plus.

I'm going to have to check my saved trips to see if I can import them into #OpenStreetMaps or something else.

I first used phone navigation in 2012, when my Windows phone (hush, you) offered Navigator. It wasn't bad but ate up the battery. Occasionally it would put me on the wrong side of town or tell me I'd arrived at my destination while I was still zooming by it on the freeway.

I've been driving across the country since the 90's, so I've no problem plotting a trip with an Atlas and local map. I just suspect they aren't to be had at the local gas stations any more.

Oh dang, my #introduction post is waaay out of date now. Let's do it again!

I have been trying to disentangle myself from Google services as much as possible, but there are two use cases I am having trouble with: Maps to quickly find business opening hours and contact info & Translate, especially for Catalan and just long texts in general. I'd appreciate some input!

I love #OpenStreetMaps, and it does increasingly include the names of businesses. But that quick click to see whether they are open, link to their website, check if the menu has vegetarian options is missing. Suggestions?

I know there are some alternatives to Google translate. DeepL does great with Spanish, but doesn't have Catalan. [I don't rely on these for communication but there are scenarios in which I like to double check that I didn't miss something or that I am using an adequately colloquial phrase]. I also don't know if the alternatives’s data policies and such are much better. Does anyone have any insight?

Down the line I might like to build up the courage to switch to LineageOS or similar. If anyone wants to talk to me about that I'd be open to it as well.

(I also feel like there must be some hashtags for folks trying to dump Google, but I have no idea what they might be.)

@EUCommission
awesome, for anyone like me, who doesnt want to, or cant use the app, you can also use this web app from them: wifi4eu.ec.europa.eu/#/list-ac

And the app doesnt have any trackers visible and only minimal permissions 👍
I wish the Data would be #opendata and you could integrate it in #openstreetmaps where other wifi hotspots are already listed, so we dont need redundant apps.
Interesting Distribution of Hotspots, why does #Denmark and the #Netherlands have so few of them?
