David Castleton (Author)<p>On or around the 16th of December, the ceremony of 'the Bringing in of the Boar's Head' took place. This custom involved a feast at which a boar's head - garlanded with bay, rosemary and laurel - was conveyed into the room on a gold or silver platter. During the entrance of this delicacy, a special song known as the Boar's Head Carol was sung, often in Latin. The considerable cost of this ritual largely confined it to the upper classes and it was celebrated at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, the royal court, the Inner Temple and aristocratic houses. The ceremony still takes place each year at Queen's College Oxford, where it is claimed to date to the 14th century. In a suitably academic origin story, a scholar was wandering in a forest with a book of Aristotle when he was attacked by a wild boar.
