The prompt is Yen
Pete Shelley, “Sky Yen”
We first met #PeteShelley as frontman of #PowerPop-inflected #punk band #Buzzcocks, and his #synthpop solo work following their dissolution, but he was busy making sounds before any of that happened.
Recorded in 1974 on, as the jacket states “purpose-built oscillator,” Sky Yen was released in 1980 when Buzzcocks were perhaps at their commercial peak, it’s hard to imagine this being pressed and released under any other circumstances.
You’ll note I referred to this work as “sounds” rather than music; this work, recorded a year before #LoReed’s arguably more musical (really) #MetalMachineMusic was released, challenges any definition of music, anticipating the #noise and #ambient genres.
I don’t expect anyone to sit through the entire length of the linked piece, but hop around a little to get a sense of the variety of sounds young Pete was no doubt annoying his parents with.
