A ham radio amateur here locally apparently fell off a trail and broke his femur (from our local radio net)

Phone did not work (out of battery or out of service).
Garmin Inreach was not charged (out of battery)
Handheld radio with GPS worked, so he was able to call out for help on 146.520 and was rescued. 😬

Well, that's definitely a lesson to keep in mind if you are e-biking in remote areas....

"According to the group, a female biker faced major complications after her e-bike battery died in a remote area. This resulted in the woman being stranded in the desert for 30 hours, pushing her bike 20 miles before she ended up being located and rescued deep in the park."

The Denver Gazette · Woman stranded for 30 hours in desert after e-bike stops working on remote trailBy Spencer McKee

I am so glad I left the first canine search team I joined.

I just found a puppy Edraith video in the archives of an early run with them. She found really nicely, even alerted (she was *only four months old* and already building alert) but because, "once your dog starts coming to alert, they never get rewarded by the hider, only you" meant that there was ZERO value for the hider - aka 'missing person'.

This meant that although she had a wonderful find - alert chain, there was zero refind, because a) she had no idea what to do and b) no point in taking me back to a person who isn't rewarding her anyway. The entire thing started to break down within weeks; and this argument along with a few others I was having with the team leads meant I quit.

About 18 months later we found a new team, and after undoing a bunch of bad habits that were created due to simple lack of reinforcement, rebuilding the alert, and then properly chaining in the refind, we did succeed!

All this to say: the answer for "To reward or not to reward?" the answer is always YES - reward!

If you like something, reward it!

Death Valley National Park: Park Rangers Rescue Man in Steep Gully

"...Two men from Belgium had set out for a short hike in Mosaic Canyon. At a canyon junction, the pair decided to split up. One hiker stayed on the main trail, while the other ventured into a side canyon, planning to loop back to the trail further up.

However, the side canyon grew steeper and more unstable as the hiker climbed, eventually leaving him unable to proceed further or safely descend. He was stranded about ½ mile from the trail wearing only a t-shirt and carrying no extra clothing, food, or water. "

How it looks when an area search dog finds you!

...you don't see them much. They work large areas (as the name implies) which means they are probably hundreds of yards, maybe even a quarter mile if the wind conditions are good, from the handler. This means they find and then have to go alert their person and bring them back! You'll see them a few times especially if the person is far away (dogs are FAST!) as they bounce between you and their handler, alerting each time.

Some from the last few days. The first one, the red/purple arc visible in the sky is known as a SAR. It is not part of the true Aurora but is a rare thermal phenomenon seen when Aurora activity is present. Other notable mentions in this picture, from bottom left to centre top, are Sirius, Orion, Jupiter and the Pleiades. The other two are more Aurora shots from previous nights. It is always interesting to see the different colours that the Aurora can produce #Aberdeenshire #Scotland #SAR #Aurora

Lessons
Summiting Mt. Whitney is a serious undertaking that requires research, training, proper gear, and experience. Hikers must have the humility and self-awareness to turn around when weather, personal fitness, or other factors make summiting unwise. Hire a guide service when you are inexperienced and/or don’t have the proper gear. 4/x

"Carrying excess water weight without hydrating sufficiently and lacking knowledge about water filtration options.

Not seeking assistance from other hikers. Although others offered to help with their gear, the hikers declined, and could have also considered hiking down and arranging for gear retrieval later by a paid guide service.

What went well

Staying together instead of splitting up.

Stopping when exhausted, rather than continuing and making the rescue more complicated." 3/x

"Inyo SAR mobilized at 10:00AM and reached the hikers by 1:40PM. After resting in the sun and allowing their shoes to dry, the hikers felt well enough to begin their descent. Accompanied by SAR, they reached the trailhead by 3:15PM. We appreciate the assistance of Good Samaritan Bridget, who helped carry some of the hikers' gear." 2/x #SearchAndRescue #SAR #hiking #Whitney
