4 years ago, I first met this gentle giant.
It's one of the only older Western red #cedar #trees left at #W̱MÍYEŦEN #NatureSanctuary. Most of the land had been logged more than once before it was acquired for conservation & rewilding. This is a 2nd growth cedar & it is over 150 yrs old.

The W̱MÍYEŦEN #Nature Sanctuary is a 42 acre protected forest and riparian area ​that supports biodiversity while preserving ecosystems and wildlife habitat. The tranquil natural environment, inspires an awareness of nature as teacher and essential ally.

I'm a member of this local, biodiverse nature sanctuary. They mainly rely on memberships & public donations. They work with #Indigenous leaders/educators/naturalists from #Wsanec First Nations. The name was changed from the former Mary Lake Sanctuary to W̱MÍYEŦEN Nature Sanctuary to respect that the property is on native lands.

Very clear evidence of #beavers activity. You can see their many chew marks on this stump. This is in a small #Saanich community park, stewarded by citizens who live beside little Calvert Lake.

Access to trails is off of Prospect Lake Rd & easy to miss if you're not paying close attention. Only room for 2 cars to park on roadside pullouts. The trails aren't very well maintained & you can easily get lost around them. I've ended up in someone's backyard once, trying to hike back out. Wear long pants because there's a lot of places you have to bushwhack through along tiny footpaths. Lots of salal, Oregon grape, lady ferns (excellent for fiddleheads harvesting) & mushrooms.

Big 4.8 #earthquake shook our house for 30 seconds & it woke me up. The #epicenter of this quake, that happened a few minutes ago, is #FridayHarbor in Washington. It felt closer than that. Our house in #Saanich shook harder & longer than last quake that happened just last week. These larger quakes are scaring me/my family with their increasing frequency & higher Richter scale numbers.

My driver for my Feb. 24-28 trip to #LakeCowichan is now very sick & won't be better anytime soon.

I need to find a replacement driver. I need transport from my South #Saanich home to LC on Feb. 24 - anytime after 1pm. I'll need transport from LC back home on Feb. 28 - anytime before noon.

I can pay driver to transport me there/back & help me load & unload luggage. I'm unable to use the IslandLink bus service because they don't have routes to LC.

I'm going location scouting for a public accessible place with rain shelter/covered area for the inaugural #SocialBC Mastodon meet-up. It will be picnic style, I'll provide some snacks & drinks. Aiming for late April/early May date & will update well in advance. It's open to all members of SocialBC & anyone else who wants to attend & already on Fediverse or interested in joining us. It will be in #VictoriaBC #Saanich or #Westshore area - depending on how my scouting goes.

It will be outdoors in #CovidSafe environment.

I'm organizing this by myself & will likely need some volunteers help closer to the date for setup & cleanup.

This year, I'm also working on launching my own "Boots for the People" donations drive. To get workboots donated to marginalized, newly housed folks who are trying to make a living from new job & for longtime housed folks living under poverty line who can't afford quality work boots.

I'll need some local volunteers in #Saanich & #VictoriaBC #VancouverIsland areas to help me with picking up/dropping off donations, help with spreading the good word out & help with obtaining free or discounted printed promo materials for the donations drive.

I'm thinking of organizing a few interactive public art events this year.

What do you all think about me organizing finger painting art therapy & some collaborative #MixedMedia art therapy sessions for adults in #VictoriaBC #Saanich #Esquimalt & some areas on Southern #VancouverIsland ? On donations basis(only to cover the costs of supplies needed).

Art & acts of creativity have been huge in my own personal healing journeys. I'd love to share that art healing power with others in the community that I live in & with surrounding communities too.

These would all be hosted outdoors. I have a few outdoor covered public spaces in mind.
