Preparing fence posts for a new 95-metre stretch of fencing. I'm working with larch—tough, durable stuff that’ll last for decades once the splint wood is removed. Each post is shaped by hand with care, aiming for precision and consistency. It’s slow, physical work, but there's real satisfaction in seeing the pile grow. These posts will form the backbone of the fence—solid, straight, and made to endure.

The insurance sector is dealing with the realities of a climate-changed world with higher payouts from more extreme weather events & more assets in harm’s way by raising premiums & reducing coverage to manage losses. As this continues, with an increasing number of regions becoming ‘ uninsurable‘, Fed Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has warned that insurance companies pull out “of coastal areas [and] areas where there are a lot of fires” the loss of available ins means that “there are going to be regions of the country where you can’t get a mortgage” in “10 or 15 years.” This would be devastating to individual homeowners & the economy at large as property values drop & governments take in less tax revenue for schools, police & other basic services. Günther Thallinger, Chair of the Investment Board of multi-national insurance company Allianz SE warns that this represents “a systemic risk that threatens the very foundation of the financial sector.”

Everyone I know is pulling back, trying to both stock up on everyday essentials and to save money for unforeseen circumstances - esp disruptions in Social Security.

Gone are the days of shopping, going to the movies, and lots of eating out. We only buy what we need now.

Projects like insulating the upstairs are now on hold. Lots of small companies will be way worse off for the wear.

Consumer sentiment hits historic low as inflation fears hit 44-year high Tariff uncertainty is sending inflation concerns to their highest point since the early ’80s. Hyunsoo Rim, 4/14/25 American consumers are bracing for rising prices — and losing faith fast. The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 50.8 in April, the lowest reading since it was impacted by post-pandemic inflation in 2022 — and the second-lowest on record since the survey began in 1952. According to the release, sentiment has plunged over 30% since December as “growing worries about trade war developments” risk tipping the economy toward recession. Rate expectations At the heart of that anxiety? A sharp increase in cost expectations. Consumers now anticipate prices will climb 6.7% over the next year, the highest expected change since 1981, despite a cooling inflation print in March. The surge reflects worries that President Trump’s sweeping reciprocal tariff policies, which pushed US tariff rates to 100-year highs, could send prices soaring. Indeed, signs of financial strain have already surfaced elsewhere. More Americans are raiding their 401(k)s to cover emergency expenses, while credit stress is mounting. In Q4 2024, the share of credit card accounts making only minimum payments — and those more than 90 days past due — both reached record highs, per the Philadelphia Fed.

When my clothes become too tired to be worn when going out, some of them are assigned to gardening duties.
The T-shirt in this photograph, frayed and with holes, must be around 15 years old. Not as old as I thought, in fact. A (now gardening) fleece is still in much better condition than this T-shirt and must be nearly 30 years old. Clothes do keep a long time.
I suspect that I would not feature in an industrialist's wet dream.

I am Eden, I am #NewHere, and I like making things grow.

My particular interests include #TreePruning (think: fruit orchards, but also espaliers and bonsai when I'm feeling particularly spicy), figuring out how to grow a #Garden on a plot that is almost 100 % sand and gets little to no rain in the summer months, #BuildingSoil, and collecting interesting vegetable varieties (bonus points if they are black/purple or variegated).

I am a mix of about 50 % idealism and 50 % cynicism. The world is going to shit, but… that doesn't mean we can't try to have nice things while we watch the world burn.
