Many agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity because they want to continue to serve veterans, and feared retribution from the Trump administration. Clinicians warn that the changes will degrade mental health treatment at the V.A., which already has severe staffing shortages. Some expect to see a mass exodus of sought-after specialists, like psychiatrists and psychologists. They expect wait times to increase, and veterans to eventually seek treatment outside the agency. “Psychotherapy is a very private endeavor,” said Ira Kedson, the president of AFGE local 310 at the Coatesville V.A. Medical Center in Pennsylvania. “It’s supposed to be a safe place, where people can talk about their deepest, darkest fears and issues.” Veterans, he said, trust that what they tell therapists is confidential. “If they can’t trust us to do that, I think that a sizable number of them will withdraw from treatment,” he said.

@TomWellborn I agree but at this time I do not believe that anything can or will deter #maga from destroying every part of our democracy [ #FreeAmerica ]. Their leader calls #veterans #suckers #losers so he has no doubt another moniker for those of us known as senior citizens. He hates all of us. This is who/what he is. And take a look at purported cabinet members who default to vitriol and deprecation in between each breath they take. Ketamine, booze, whatever norm can be broken, they will so.

I want you to sign onto the Protect Veteran Jobs Act (Senators Tammy Duckworth and Andy Kim and Rep Derek Tran) and work to move it to a floor vote so recently fired Veterans can get their federal jobs back. Be loud about this bill. Make sure Republicans have to vote on it, showing who they support: Veterans or DOGE.

Also please support the Senate VA Committee push-back on the arbitrary number of 80,000 jobs to cut at the VA. Committee Chair Jerry Moran recently noted, "The goal ought not be a number. The goal ought to be, determine what the mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs is, and how many people in the workforce it takes to accomplish that mission in an effective and efficient way.”

The VA is experiencing its highest-ever service levels, delivering more than 127 million health care appointments for more than 9 million enrollees. Give Veterans and VA experts full say in how the transformation of that department takes place.

When you are holding town halls in the Republican areas of the state, please make make clear the specific actions you are taking to support Veterans.
