Jasmine Mangalaseril 🧁Day 25 of 30 Days of Local Food: The Neighbourhood Group of Restaurants<br> <br> I spent seven years as a restaurant reviewer, focussing on the experience (the ambiance, service, food). But, in reality, it’s never just about the dining experience (much to the chagrin of those seeking simplistic yums, regressive views of “worthy” food, it-spots, and petulant slams). I think it’s also about the impact on workers, producers, and communities. The Neighbourhood Group is a certified B-Corp, a designation where people are put before profits and sustainability isn't a causewashing catchphrase. And while some restaurants (and chefs) see “local food” as an excuse to bolster inaccessibility, at the Neighbourhood Group, it's about tasty and creative dishes without lofty prices or snooty attitudes.<br> <br> Restaurants:<br> Borealis Kitchener : 4336 King Street East, Kitchener<br> Borealis Guelph : 1388 Gordon St, Guelph<br> Miijidaa :37 Quebec St, Guelph<br> Park Eatery : 294 Woolwich Street, Guelph<br> The Wooly Pub : 176 Woolwich Street, Guelph<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/BuyLocal?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BuyLocal</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Canada?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Canada</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/SMB?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SMB</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/WaterlooRegion?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WaterlooRegion</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/WellingtonCounty?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WellingtonCounty</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/GuelphFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GuelphFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Waterloofoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Waterloofoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/kitchenerfoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#kitchenerfoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CambridgeFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CambridgeFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/KitchenerWaterlooFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KitchenerWaterlooFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CanadianFood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CanadianFood</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Restaurants?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Restaurants</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/BCorp?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BCorp</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/ExploreWaterlooRegion?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ExploreWaterlooRegion</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Food?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Food</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Mastonom?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Mastonom</a>
Jasmine Mangalaseril 🧁Day 22 of 30 Days of Local Food: Mountainoak Cheese<br> <br> Adam van Bergeijk has been a cheesemaker for more than 40 years. The Dutch farm crisis of the 80s led his family to immigrate to Wilmot Township almost 30 years ago—the land is part of a finite amount of precious, fertile space: once lost, it will not return. Within a few years, he restarted cheesemaking. It wasn’t long before Mountainoak began winning international cheesemaking competitions. Adam, his wife Hanne, and their cheeses are local, national, and international culinary gems.<br> <br> <br> <br> Mountainoak Cheese: 3165 Huron Road, New Hamburg<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/BuyLocal?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BuyLocal</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Canada?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Canada</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/SMB?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SMB</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/WaterlooRegion?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WaterlooRegion</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/WellingtonCounty?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WellingtonCounty</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/GuelphFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GuelphFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Waterloofoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Waterloofoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/kitchenerfoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#kitchenerfoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CambridgeFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CambridgeFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/KitchenerWaterlooFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KitchenerWaterlooFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CanadianFood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CanadianFood</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Cheese?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Cheese</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/kweats?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#kweats</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/ExploreWaterlooRegion?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ExploreWaterlooRegion</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Food?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Food</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Mastonom?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Mastonom</a>

Jasmine Mangalaseril 🧁Day 18 of 30 Days of Local Food: Eby Manor (dairy)<br> <br> We’re really lucky to have a safe supply of Canadian milk (and meats and veggies and…). Chances are, if you’re buying fresh milk here, it’s produced by Canadian dairy farmers. Most of the fresh cow milk we get here is from cows that produce milk with A1 proteins, but here in Waterloo, Eby Manor has been producing Guernsey milk (with A2 proteins) for more than a dozen years And I’ve been using it almost as long. Fantastic straight, in tea, and baking, frankly my best homemade ice creams are made with it.<br> <br> Eby Manor Dairy Market: 1174 Weeby Place, Waterloo<br> (also available at dozens of independent shops and a few mainstream grocers in Waterloo-Wellington)<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/BuyLocal?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BuyLocal</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Canada?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Canada</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/SMB?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SMB</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/WaterlooRegion?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WaterlooRegion</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/WellingtonCounty?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WellingtonCounty</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/GuelphFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GuelphFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Waterloofoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Waterloofoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/kitchenerfoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#kitchenerfoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CambridgeFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CambridgeFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/KitchenerWaterlooFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KitchenerWaterlooFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CanadianFood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CanadianFood</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CanadianDairy?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CanadianDairy</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/A2Milk?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#A2Milk</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/kweats?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#kweats</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/ExploreWaterlooRegion?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ExploreWaterlooRegion</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Food?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Food</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Mastonom?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Mastonom</a>

They started with pupusas, and now their menu includes pastelitos and empanadas, tacos, pescado frito, and sopa de res.<br> <br> Mi Tienda Latina: 103 Ontario Street South, Kitchener,<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/BuyLocal?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BuyLocal</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Canada?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Canada</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CanadianFood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CanadianFood</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/WaterlooRegion?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WaterlooRegion</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/WellingtonCounty?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WellingtonCounty</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/GuelphFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GuelphFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Waterloofoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Waterloofoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/kitchenerfoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#kitchenerfoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CambridgeFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CambridgeFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/KitchenerWaterlooFoodies?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KitchenerWaterlooFoodies</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/SMB?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SMB</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/kweats?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#kweats</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/LatinFood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LatinFood</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/CanadianFood?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CanadianFood</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/ExploreWaterlooRegion?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ExploreWaterlooRegion</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Food?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Food</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Mastonom?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Mastonom</a>

Here’s a view of the aptly named Spur Line Trail in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. As with the Market Trial, it runs parallel to a railroad track. The train in the photo is servicing industrial customers north of Waterloo. This is a few blocks from my house. I ride this trail often, though don’t see trains on it that often while riding!</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/BikeNite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BikeNite</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/WaterlooRegion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WaterlooRegion</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Railroad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Railroad</span></a></p>

There are some lovely multi-use paths in Waterloo Region. They’re probably nothing special, but they bring me joy and more and more facilities open every year. This is the Market Trail, between Waterloo, Ontario, and St. Jacob’s, Ontario.
