Further benefit: Linux is not forcing you to throw away perfectly good computer hardware just to update to #Win11.

The time has finally come. As much as we really don't want to do this, we're planning to do an in-place upgrade from Windows 10 to 11, as no way are we doing a completely clean install. (Those take us SO much longer to get all the settings back!!!)

We'll be making a full backup in case we want to go back, and we're making the standard preparations to remove or stop certain things running at startup that aren't compatible with Windows 11.

The main ones we'll be stopping are StartIsBack and 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, but we'll also tell apps like Steam, Discord etc. to cool it on loading at startup until all is sorted.

We know that StartIsBack has a Windows 11 version, and that 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn't, so we've got the "joy" of finding a replacement for that. Plus we'll disable PersistentWindows, as we shouldn't need it in Windows 11.

Are there any other pitfalls others have experienced that we might want to keep in mind?

e.g.,

  • Any issues with graphics drivers or software?
  • Any issues with sound drivers or software?
  • Any issues with any other startup programs?

@ai6yr @briankrebs OFC this targets #TechIlliterates and the only effective means here are:

  1. Teach #TechLiteracy instead of consumerism.
  2. Mandate #confirmation & #notification - #PopUp|s for every use of #Clipboard (similar to #webcam use by websites)...
  3. Ban #JavaScript - seriously!
  4. Ban #Windows, because it's a #Govware, espechally since #Windows10 and even more so on #Windows11 that is *insecure in every configuration!
  5. Put #TechIlliterates before a system they can't feck up. I.e. @tails_live @tails / #Tails for that reason alone (can't run such commands if they neither got #root nor any #persistent #storage to target).
  6. Normalize the use of @torproject #TorBrowser!
  7. #Teach #tech #literacy instead of #consumerism!
  8. Ban #GAFAMs and their shitty products!
  9. Migrate every #TechIlliterate to #Linux and don't give them administrative privilegues.

Wenn wir @Datenpunks am Mittwoch 18:30 Uhr im Klimabüro Gütersloh mit dem FSUB e.V. eine Linux-Install-Party veranstalten, haben wir natürlich frische Multi-Boot-Sticks dabei, die wir zum Hardware-Preis (5€) abgeben. Darauf haben wir 21 Betriebssystemvarianten hinterlegt, die vor Ort unverbindlich ausprobiert oder auch gleich installiert werden können.

Aktueller Anlass: Im Oktober stellt Microsoft den Support für #Windows10 ein. #Windows11 will sich auf vielen Computern nicht installieren lassen, obwohl die noch völlig in Ordnung sind. Mit GNU/Linux laufen sie weiter sicher und sogar flott.

Alle sind willkommen (außer Nazis). Eintritt frei! Bringt einen Laptop mit! Macht vorher ein Backup! Linux-Vorkenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich.

Gentle reminder that we're now about 38 weeks from #microsoft cutting support for #windows10 . Many perfectly functional computers are incompatible with #windows11 . Here are your options:

1. Carry on with #windows10 with high security risks.
2. Buy new and expensive hardware just for #windows11 .
3. Install #linux (such as #linuxmint ). It takes about two months (at the most) to acclimate.
