Senator Paula Simons🇨🇦
The City of Edmonton has declared today, March 21, as Save Soil Day. I was at City Hall for the presentation of the official proclamation, and to speak to the gathered group about our recent Senate report on soil health. Tomorrow, the Save Soil group hosts a free double-bill at Campus Saint-Jean theatre: first, the documentary film Common Ground, followed by a one-woman show by Dale Hamilton called She Won’t Come in From the Fields. #yeg #yegcc #Edmonton #SenateofCanada #ualberta #SoilHealth

Ned Yeung
I have some serious concerns about the upcoming municipal elections in Edmonton, thanks to the meddling of Danielle Smith to introduce "political parties" into our formerly independent civic elections.

Make no mistake about it, the whole purpose of political parties in municipal elections is to introduce "big party politics" with big money backing, allowing one party to dominate the sphere and push out independent candidates who were elected by individual merit alone.

Check out this bot-like behavior for an example. We know how Conservative parties are already trolling every City of Edmonton government post with vitriol and hate, especially on anything claiming any kind of inclusion, from cycling infrastructure to acknowledgement of 2SLGBTQIA+ or Indigenous people, to be a "waste of money", backing that with the nastiest comment towards the real people with real needs who are getting some sort of recognition for their struggles.

With political parties in municipal elections, our coming campaign period is going to be flooded with party politics drowning out independent voices with their loudest, scariest, most divisive politics. This is going to be a nightmare, and will very likely destroy the currently left-leaning City Council dynamic we have from good politicians who were elected by the people because they represented the needs people have. The next council is likely to be elected based on mass smear campaigns and party politics backed by deep financial resources, drowning out the voices of the independent politicians with something useful to say.

ie, PACE is already calling our city council "radical" and accusing them of "sham engagement". This is political spin for "spending public funds on public interests," and "recognizing marginalized folk". Many aren't knowledgeable enough to recognize these "big party" spins.

I am very afraid.

That is why Danielle Smith doesn't want municipal politics to be independent, because politicians elected on personal merit are inherently left-leaning, just like in science and research, which is why she chose to shut down funding to academics if their research doesn't result in enough "Conservative views", artificially forcing her ideologies when they don't stand up to academic scrutiny.

You can't just force bias because you don't like the results of the scientific process, or the democratic process!

#yeg #abpoli

vga256
back in the early and mid-90s, getting on the net meant you were a university student, or had corporate access through a big company. getting online wasn't easy.

worse, even if you had a dialup number and login, there was no such thing as a tcp/ip stack built-in to Windows 3.1.

even if you *did* have a winsock stack, you'd still need a file downloading protocol, gopher client, world wide web client, ftp client, email client. just getting your machine off the ground was nearly impossible unless you could grab these from a local BBS

to make things simpler, universities began offering dial-up internet software packages to their students and staff.

in 1994, my mom was an undergrad student at the University of Alberta. our family had just bought an IBM PS/1 with a 2400 baud modem, and i was abusing the hell out of our single phone line at night visiting local BBSes.

she somehow found out that the university was selling internet dial-up software for $10 to students, and brought home the diskette pack with her. along with a USR Sportster 14.4k modem, she gave me the install diskettes as a valentine's day gift.

it had a slick setup program that enabled SLIP using Trumpet Winsock, and provided a local (free!) dial-up number for access.

after 25 years, i finally tracked down a few versions of those diskettes. i've imaged them and uploaded them all to IA.

the first version of the dial-up package in 1994 was called WinSLIP. it had no PPP support yet, but contained some really cool shareware internet utilities like HGopher and NCSA Mosaic. this would have been the earliest programs offered for Windows 3.1

WinSLIP/MSKermit 1994/95:
https://archive.org/details/ua_winslip

The second version of the software was renamed to NetSurf. Ned Yeung
One thing I totally don't get about the anti-vaccination "logic"... so the measles vaccine is the old-fashioned kind which introduces a bit of weakened virus into the system so your body can identify it to build up a natural immunity.

So how can those who actively oppose healthcare argue so loudly on every public health notice, that you should just let yourself get sick with measles, suffer through the whole thing, then as long as you survive you will have immunity and be stronger for it?

That's exactly what the vaccine does, except safely, without the consequences.

This practice has been done for centuries, and is not "modern medicine".

You are introducing your body to the disease, to build a natural immunity. You can do it safely, or you can do it with great pain and suffering and even the potential of death. So yeah... uh, let's go with Option B to achieve the same result?

Is that really what's best for your children, and mine?

Forget about safely learning swordplay with practice wooden or bamboo swords so that you know how to handle it before the time comes when you need it, let's just give everyone real swords and send them off into battle with no training.

"Don't live in fear," live in chaos.

So anyways, on to the public health alert for Alberta and Edmonton specifically, even more specifically, people who were at the Stollery Children's Hospital's emergency department between March 14 at 10 p.m. and March 15 at 12:30 a.m. and anyone who was at the Belle Rive Medicentres Family Health Care Clinic in northeast Edmonton on March 12 between 2:15 p.m. and about 5:15 p.m.:

'Health officials say anyone who was exposed to a possible confirmed case may be at risk of getting sick and is strongly encouraged to review their vaccination records, AHS said.

Anyone who was potentially exposed and was born in or after 1970, and has less than two documented doses of vaccine, is at risk for developing measles and should monitor themselves for symptoms, AHS said.

Symptoms include a fever of 38.3° C or higher, a cough, runny nose and red eyes, and a red blotchy rash that appears three to seven days after a fever starts, beginning behind the ears and on the face.

People who are pregnant, young children and those with weakened immune systems are among those most at risk for complications from the disease which can include infections of the middle ear and the lung and swelling of the brain.

According to data from AHS, one to three out of every 1,000 measles cases is fatal. More than 90 per cent of people who are not immune and come into contact with the virus will become infected.

If symptoms develop, individuals are advised to stay home and call Health Link at 811 before visiting any health-care facility.

In Alberta, measles vaccine doses are offered, free of charge, through the province's immunization program. People exposed to the disease may also be eligible for vaccine or immune globulin to reduce the risk of developing measles.

Albertans uncertain of their immunization history are encouraged to call Health Link at 811 or contact their public health office.'

And finally, a statement by Dr. Mark Joffe, Alberta's chief medical officer of health:

"Measles is not just a mild childhood illness — it is a serious, highly infectious disease that can have devastating consequences.

Thankfully, we have a highly effective vaccine with a long-proven track record of safety. Senator Paula Simons🇨🇦
Earlier this week, I had a honour of joining two of Edmonton, and Canada’s, most extraordinary queer rights advocates, Doug Stollery KC and Justice Julie Lloyd, onstage at the #ualberta Timms Theatre to discuss the impact of the historic Vriend decision, which established equal rights protections for #LGBQT Canadians. Our conversation, moderated by Fiona Kelly, the new Dean of Law, was inspired by a screening of the terrific Vriend documentary Pride vs Prejudice. #yeg #Edmonton #Vriend
