@tinker Also, Critical Mass back in the day was worse, we sold stickers and t shirts and stuff at more or less cost (a T short that cost us $8.50-ish for $10 because making change is a pain) and stickers by donation. Then every year we'd spend some of the excess printing posters to advertise our biggest ride.
And a bike light give-away then eventually donated some to a bike-related cause.

I'm part of one group that definitely does spend money, a couple of hundred dollars every year. Our local MP helped us apply for a grant so now we have thousands of dollars in a bank account.
Luckily we have an organising committee to open the bank account and organise spending the money. They keep arguing about who to donate the excess to, or what to spend it on (my input: let it sit there, it's not worth arguing about).

People pick up food and drop it off. They volunteer their time and gas/electricity/feet-movement and get some food out of it.
