'Researchers have developed a reactor that pulls carbon dioxide directly from the air and converts it into sustainable fuel, using sunlight as the power source. ... Unlike most carbon capture technologies, the reactor developed by the Cambridge researchers does not require fossil-fuel-based power, or the transport and storage of carbon dioxide, but instead converts atmospheric CO2 into something useful using sunlight."

New powder that captures carbon could be ‘quantum leap’ for industry

Just half a pound of the stuff may remove as much #CarbonDioxide as a tree can, according to early tests.
The powder is known as a covalent organic framework, with strong chemical bonds that pull gases out of the air. The material is both durable and porous, and can be used hundreds of times, making it superior to other materials used for #CarbonCapture.

"Well #BigOil in Canada had to be pushed back with legislation on #greenwashing because their claim repeatedly is 'we are leading the path to #NetZero by 2050.' This feels like an admission that everything they've been saying about #CarbonCapture & what's going to happen with #emissions isn't true."

Carbon #emissions are now growing faster than before the #pandemic
Despite talk of a green recovery, global #greenhousegas emissions continued to rise as the world emerged from coronavirus lockdowns. Emissions rose 1.3% to 57.1 gigatons of #carbondioxide in #2023. That is far faster annual rate of growth than during 2010-2019, when emissions grew on average 0.8% per year. In fact, global greenhouse gas emissions are now just below the 59.1 gigatons peak recorded in 2019.

That target has stayed in place, even as countries have failed to limit #FossilFuel burning: #CarbonDioxide concentrations in the atmosphere are rising at a record pace, acc/to observations in March at Hawaii’s MLO.

But in a special #UnitedNations report in 2018, scientists & #climate modelers popularized a controversial idea: that nations could “#overshoot” the target temporarily, & then bring temperatures back down in the future.

Discovery of 3,775-year-old preserved log supports 'wood vaulting' as a climate solution

A new study published in the journal Science suggests that an ordinary old log could help refine strategies to tackle climate change.

A team of researchers led by University of Maryland Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Professor Ning Zeng analyzed a 3,775-year-old log and the soil it was excavated from. Their analysis, published on September 27, 2024, revealed that the log had lost less than 5% carbon dioxide from its original state thanks to the low-permeability clay soil that covered it.

Not mentioned is that some of the oldest living things on Earth...are trees.

"Once in operation, the spacecraft will scan about 50,000 square miles (130,000 square kilometers) of Earth’s surface per day. #CarbonMapper scientists will analyze data from Tanager-1 to identify gas plumes with the unique spectral signatures of #methane and #CarbonDioxide — and pinpoint their sources. Plume data will be publicly available online at the Carbon Mapper data portal."

Screw you, #CO2. We're all gonna burn through you!

Maybe.

If this works, in the 2100's or beyond, we may be facing a crisis of lack of #CarbonDioxide because #capitalism is insatiable.

Loss of #biodiversity and ending other #GreenhouseGas #emissions would still be issues to address, but using CO2 as an affordable, #scalable, #energy source might be a great Everything, Everywhere, All at Once #ClimateChange mitigation solution.
