I finally managed to delete my FB account. The last straw came yesterday when my niece saw an account set up in the name of her deceased brother come up as someone "you might know." She reported it and got the response that the obviously fake account would not be taken down because, while it "might be upsetting," it didn't violate community standards. FB is irredeemable garbage. #DeleteFacebook

On Signal as a replacement for Facebook’s (Meta) WhatsApp

As I’ve posted before, I’ve deleted all of my #Facebook / #Meta accounts. And, have long since deleted my #Twitter (X) account.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time today with a colleague exploring and experimenting with Signal. It looks like it might be a viable solution. You might take a look too at signal.org.

If you want to beat the Trump billionaires, attack their revenue stream by opting out.

I never used Facebook until I published my first book in 2023, and I was told (by my publisher, by other authors) that I needed to create a Facebook author page, so I did. I tried posting and updating it at first, but, to be honest, I never found it useful, and it's a relief to simply delete it now. I've always found way more engagement here on #mastodon #bookstodon

All the recent news about Meta has me determined to start some serious arm-twisting with my family.

Can anyone point me to a good, non-paywalled summary of the crap they are engaging in? Something I can pass along to non-tech types?

Also, I suspect this won't have the most satisfactory answers, but what are the easy alternatives for those non-techy types?

Facebook → ?
Instagram → ?
WhatsApp → ? (Signal? The big trick with these is that you need your intended message recipient on the same platform, too, no?)

I'm going to be at a big family dinner in a few weeks... might be a good time to get the message out to the group, so they can coordinate.

Any help/advice is appreciated!

Well, I deleted by FB page and my personal account today, for lots of reasons. So the Fediverse is now my only platform.

I had already erased all the images of my artwork from there a while back, as I'm not interested in their AI scraping my stuff. Also their moderation is now garbage. No need to put up with that.

The pinned post was a direction to come here, lol. So, here I am, and here I remain.
