Terrestrial life oasis from end-#Permian mass #extinction period discovered
phys.org/news/2025-03-terrestr paper: science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

"a region in Turpan-Hami Basin served as a refugium for terrestrial #plants during the end-Permian #MassExtinction... The discovery provides the first conclusive fossil evidence of a terrestrial plant community that remained largely undisturbed throughout the extinction event, allowing for continuous evolution and rapid ecological recovery afterward."

Deep-sea fish study reveals evolutionary marvels in Earth's hadal zone phys.org/news/2025-03-deep-sea

#Evolution and genetic adaptation of fishes to the deep sea sciencedirect.com/science/arti

"they confirmed a century-old hypothesis about deep-sea #fish evolution involving two distinct pathways. 'Ancient survivors' colonized the deep sea before the #Cretaceous mass #extinction, while 'new immigrants' account for the majority of modern #DeepSea species that emerged after the #MassExtinction."

Amazon forest felled to build road for climate summit

“A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.”

Who needs a giant asteroid when we have these assholes?

@EUCommission Did I miss one of the most important panels for the problems of our time: a green panel with fighting #climatechange? A coloured one with fighting #biodiversityLoss?
I found only watering down climate aims for the industry, the car industry, and the agricultural sector too.

If we had won all possible wars and deleted fascist systems one day, we'll die because of #climatecrisis and species #extinction?

BTW, I miss #TaxTheRich.

Fascinating conservation methods. A regionally extinct and rare lichen returns to East Anglia. The magic formula for success: bookbinding glue! theguardian.com/environment/20

I already heard about the transplantation of lichens but it is extremely difficult: they need their exact pH.

Factors contributing directly to platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) mortality and implications for conserving populations in the wild

" Based on details of more than 400 platypus deaths with an identifiable cause recorded since 1989,
five main factors contributed directly to platypus mortalities:

drowning in fish nets or enclosed crustacean traps (such as opera house traps),
being killed by predators (especially canids),
becoming accidentally hooked by recreational anglers who then cut the line,
becoming entangled in discarded fishing line or other types of litter and
being hit by motor vehicles

... Additional mortality factors included drought, severe flooding, being drawn into irrigation pumps and entrapment in manmade materials or infrastructure.

Disease was implicated as being the likely causal agent in two platypus deaths, including a female that died late in lactation.

Platypus mortalities were recorded throughout the year on the southeastern Australian mainland but peaked in early autumn, when many recently weaned juveniles are likely to be present. Given the very high number of platypus mortalities attributed to the use of fish nets or enclosed crustacean traps, their use should be banned in all waters where platypus population are known to occur. Did #dinosaurs emerge in the low latitude? Maybe even in the equatorial regions? There are indications to that. This idea is tantalizing to me because it might relate to what preceded... after the Permo-Triassic #extinction, some have argued that the low latitudes were depleted because it got so hot (see work by Paul Wignall and co.). Were there empty #ecological niches there that allowed for this group to rise? I don't know, but it's interesting.

"This #discovery is particularly exciting because the specimen is about 98 million years old. This is about four million years before the final #extinction of #ichthyosaurs, which makes it one of the youngest semi-complete ichthyosaur skeletons known."
