The elusive Inbox Zero, a waypoint on my quest to de-Google my life.
Sadly, I just forwarded all the email backlog to my new account, but nice to see what an empty inbox looks like.
***** Warning regarding AI contamination of #Google #Gmail search function *****
Google is changing the way message search works in Gmail, to use their defective AI systems to show you results in a way the AI thinks is best for you, meaning you could easily miss important messages when searching in Gmail when the AI screws up, which it will frequently do because it doesn't understand what your messages actually mean.
There will apparently be a way to switch to "Most recent" instead of "Most Relevant", but it will probably be on you to change this setting and I don't know at this time if this change will stick between sessions.
Google continues to ram their defective AI down people's throats.
How do people feel about #ProtonMail? I would like to get off gmail, mostly as a matter of principle, and the basic plan is $5/month *Canadian*, which is pretty cheap, but I'm curious what other people's experience has been. Specifically, have you had any trouble with their "bridge" app to using your own email client (NB: I'm on #Betterbird).
While #Google keeps pouring resources into Gemini AI garbage that they're constantly finding new ways to ram down our throats, #Gmail is being inundated with spam, especially fake cash app and other "deposited in your account" spams, followed by fake "Gmail Support Team" spams. Meanwhile, Gmail continues to be by far the #1 source of phishing attack email hitting users on mail platforms other than Gmail.
Have you already switched your Gmail to a new e-mail provider?
If no, what are you waiting for?
If yes, which one? Was it difficult to migrate? Do you like the design of your new providers interface? Do you find it easy to use? Are you happy with it?
Tell us more about your experience!
Given #mozilla now-ambiguous statements about privacy, what do we think about using #firefox Relay for email masking/alias?
Relay is a part of my ongoing effort to tighten up email security as I de-Google my online life. I like that Relay is free since I'm trying a bunch of new stuff and may not like it.
Otherwise my only loyalty to it is that I've already invested the time to set up the masks and forwarding, NBD.
@MissGayle no, the servers don't even allow to send emails unencrypted, so all the emails must be e2e encrypted, there is no data mining, in fact the #ArcaneChat and #DeltaChat apps focus on removing all possible metadata from email even if you use them with ex. #gmail, you don't even need to use https://arcanechat.me server, you can even setup your own, unlike #protonmail and #tutanota, this is not a silo that requires to use their specific app with their specific central server
I have seen article claiming that #Google is going to switch to requiring use of #QRcodes (which I loathe) in order to use #gmail, sometime in the not too distant future. The other email that I have used in the past gradually became useless in recent years (I suspect Gmail of blocking smaller mail servers) so I have just finished migrating everything to my gmail address, but it looks like I now need to migrate elsewhere.
Can people recommend a reliable email service?
If you are one of the estimated 1.8B users of #Gmail (as I am), I recommend reading the following articles & doing a #SecurityCheck on your Gmail account (as I just did) to make your account as secure as possible.
I'm looking at what other Big Tech stuff I can remove from my life. Google is obviously the biggest one.
Does anyone here use ProtonMail? Any of their other products?
Reminder that you should move your email archive to another provider, preferably one in Europe, and delete everything in GMail, including in the "all mail" folder.
Then cancel the account entirely if you can, or put a permanent "vacation" message saying that your clients / organizations should not use google products for security reasons.
Also be sure and delete everything out of google drive.
Even if you do cancel the acct(s), they will not delete your data immediately, or possibly ever. You need to do it yourself.
Your data is not safe with google. They have AI crawling every bit of it, and data mine for hundreds of third parties you know nothing about, including muskrat et al.
Additionally, any online service or app you use that has an option to login with google, you should replace. They are letting google data mine your info.
Time to pull the kill switch.
I'm looking for a reliable (preferably EU) alternative to #Gmail.
Uuugh I've been putting it off for YEARS, because it's such a hassle , but with #Google happily changing the Gulf of Mexico's name and now #GoogleCalendar removing cultural observances such as Pride Month, Black History Month, Women's History Month and Holocaust Remembrance day... I finally need to move my email from Gmail to a more ethical alternative.
Recommendations anyone? No selfhosting pls.
