💻 Hello Old Friend, Talos II 💻

This was my first IBM POWER9 system, acquired in 2020 and built for home/desk use. Dual socket SMT4 Sforza, 144 threads, 256-512GB RAM, various storage/net/accelerators over the years. [1]

As expected, I fell in love and acquired four IBM Power System L922-2U [2], which are presently in the colo awaiting network rebuild (remote hands this time).

The Talos II has served a variety of purposes, with most of its time running FreeBSD PPC64le (&a bit of PPC64be for fun). Sometimes also Linux, back when I was tearing into qemu code for compiler optimization hypothesis testing, RTX GPU passthrough, +validating assumptions about qemu on P9/le handling amd64 & arm64 emulation.

So, out of storage! Into the rack! New user accounts! But first it needs updated OS drives (the 3x 64GB SATADOM in Raid-Z1 need to be repurposed), and a NIC (25G-DP CX-5 or X710-DA4).

US hardware standards are INSANE.
Working on a prop for my action-figure photo comic, "Minions at Work," and I want to attach some decorative lamp finials upside down as legs for a piece of furniture. Go to store, get some screws. Easy, right? A standard 1/4" screw is 20 pitch thread. But a lamp finial is 1/4" 27 pitch, for reasons that probably made sense to Tommy Edison. Can't find screws like I want, even online. (cont.)

- "Build Day Monday Funday, Yet Another Machine Intelligence System [YAMIS]"
- Season 2, Episode 4: Mostly Modern Systems and Hardware Engineering

Despite some goon sending this kinda pricey Ice Lake Xeon through international post, wrapped up in two thin layers of non/anti-static bubble wrap shoved into a Tyvek shipping bag (not a box!), it arrived yesterday and seems to be in decent shape after a trip from Australia to the middle of America.

So, what one does with a NOS (new old stock) bit of hardware which needs to be perfect in order to function, we inspect with macro photos and various image filtering methods to identify any potential flaws.

CPU: Intel Xeon 8370C
Spec: 32 cores, 64 threads, 2.8GHz base clock
Dimensions: my favorite general purpose lip gloss (sorta) tube for scale

- What problem do you have?
- It gets very hot, and fans are very loud.
- What's the brand of the laptop?
- NEMO
- Nemo? Like in "Finding Nemo?"
- Yes
- Not Acer, ASUS, MSI, Lenovo... just "NEMO"?
- Yes, I 've already told you.
- Are you sure madam?
- Yes, very sure.
- And... how do you know is "NEMO"?
- When I turn it on it reflects the brand on the wall.

My latest blog post: VanSpoof – A-Muntzing We Will Go

With my first few VanSpoof prototypes assembled, I had noticed that the L78L05 was sometimes getting a little hot. Instead of knuckling down and calculating more suitable component values, I turned to the tried and tested method of Muntzing to get my power draw down.

🔧 Yesterday’s Lab Power Supply Adventure ⚡

I repaired a Topward TPS-4000 lab power supply from the 1980s. It has two 30V, 3A channels in a master-slave setup.
🛠 Issues:
🔸 Slave channel dead – a shorted Zener diode and bad LEDs/transistors.
🔸 Master channel unstable – turned out to be a cold solder joint on the main capacitor!
📖 The service manual was a lifesaver, and the build quality impressed me.
Ever had a repair like this?

I like this advice:

"if you're worried about security updates, or it getting messed up as a result of it, don't put the thing on the fucking internet

your printer doesn't need to be on the internet

you can put it on your local network and you can block it from ever connecting to the internet so you don't have to worry about security issues ..."
