We will be the laughingstock of civilized countries, who will be shocked at how far, and how fast, we’ve fallen. </p><p>American influence in world affairs will have virtually disappeared. </p><p><a href="https://babka.social/tags/Hate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hate</span></a> crimes will be at record levels. The <a href="https://babka.social/tags/wealthGap" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wealthGap</span></a> between the 1% and the rest of us will have skyrocketed, as will the national debt and the trade deficit. </p><p>The world’s population of displaced people will have grown by tens of millions, as <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Republicans" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Republicans</span></a> slap one another on the back to congratulate themselves on having denied refuge to the poor, the hungry, the huddled masses yearning to be free. </p><p>At home, <a href="https://babka.social/tags/women" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>women</span></a>’s <a href="https://babka.social/tags/healthcare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>healthcare</span></a> will lie in tatters. The number of unwanted children and maternal deaths will rival those of the most backwards nations on Earth. Millions of citizens will be without <a href="https://babka.social/tags/healthinsurance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>healthinsurance</span></a>. </p><p>American children and adults will be dying in record numbers from previously eradicated diseases.</p>

Yet the country has among the worst health outcomes. Americans are more likely to die younger, have multiple chronic conditions, and die from a preventable or treatable malady, relative to citizens in other rich nations.</p><p>This is worth keeping in mind each time we read about the “strong” US consumer and jobs market. Healthcare spending is the largest component of American households’ services expenditure (which drives overall consumption). As for employment, more than 40 per cent of new private sector jobs created since the start of 2023 have been in healthcare. The biggest US industries by revenue include hospitals, drug wholesalers and medical insurers.</p><p>Put simply, a significant share of the US’s “booming” economy is generated by sickness.
