After all, why not? You've already <em>got</em> the thing, all you need is for it to <em>increase in value</em>. One classic mechanism for which is to <em>constrain the supply</em>. And there are lots of ways to do that with housing: big lots, big houses, construction and zoning laws, lousy infrastructure (crime, schools, transportation). So that the limited supply that <em>is</em> attractive <em>keeps getting bid up</em>. That's one of the big changes. And it was happening <em>like gangbusters</em> in the 1970s and 1980s especially, and since.</p><p>At the same time, a bunch of the upward-mobility-escalator stuff starts disappearing. Among others, we need ways of helping those in mental illness or drug abuse episodes. This requires emergency treatment BEFORE housing and support. But up front, there’s a duvet and a pair of shoes on a park bench—just a reminder of homelessness. It’s easy to look away, clean up, and keep moving. But how often do we stop and think about how quickly anyone could end up in that situation? When safety nets fail, the reality becomes impossible to ignore.<br>

And just to be clear, I’m not posting this to get likes or attention. I really couldn’t care less if anyone likes my photos. What I want to show is the side we usually look past. Maybe we need to remind ourselves more often of how lucky we are? We often take our comfort for granted, but it’s fragile. Small changes in circumstances can have a big impact.<br>

I could also question myself, whether it’s fair or not to expose these people. But then again, what’s the alternative? Ignoring them entirely?<br>
