#Hummingbird chick acts like a #caterpillar to survive
phys.org/news/2025-03-hummingb

"Unlike most #hummingbirds, the jacobin chick was covered in long brown feathers... they saw a predatory #wasp approach the chick when the mother was away. As the wasp hovered above the nest, the chick started to twitch its body vigorously, swinging its head from side to side. A few seconds later, the wasp flew away... many #caterpillars in this region have similar-looking brown hairs that can give painful stings"

Hummingbirds in Andes Mountains found nesting in colonies, defying norms phys.org/news/2025-03-hummingb paper: academic.oup.com/auk/advance-a

"#Hummingbirds are often highly aggressive and territorial, but in the tough terrains of the #Andes Mountains, researchers found a species of #hummingbird is living cohesively with its peers... They live in a very harsh environment above the tree line... they may get easier access to mates and food resources by an exchange of information between members of a colony."

Two photos of the same male Anna’s hummingbird. The photos were one second apart. The feathers’ iridescence is structural, not from dyes. It’s caused by layers of tiny granules of melanin in the feather barbules. The melanin is dark brown or black. The structure of the granules results in the nearly specular reflection of narrow wavelength bands of light and the absorption of other colours. Unedited images.

Here’s the science!
