Bitte keine "wechsel doch zu xyz- Vorschläge" Meine Frau (Lehrerin) hat von der Stadt Düsseldorf ein iPad als Endgerät bekommen, die städtische Mail-Adresse abgeschaltet, und es gab die Anweisung Thunderbird zu installieren.
Wir sehen nicht ein, das private #android Smartphone mit Arbeitsmails zuzuspammen, vom #Datenschutz ganz zu schweigen

The design of my first OC is now complete. “Vanilla Von Düh” the little witch from the forest around the corner. I'm super happy with how she looks now, even though it was a real struggle to get to this point.

Here's what's been going down in these waters: Lots of polish for our #DawnPatrolBeta testers, plus many cool #SurfFeeds to browse and some #ipad love.

Passkey/password bug: iOS 18.3.1

Ook in iOS versie 18.3.1 is de eerder door mij gemelde iCloud KeyChain (*) kwetsbaarheid nog niet gerepareerd (eerder schreef ik hierover, Engelstalig: https://infosec.exchange/@ErikvanStraten/113821443334366419).

(*) Tegenwoordig is dat de app genaamd "Wachtwoorden" (of "Passwords").

De kwetsbaarheid bestaat indien:

• De eigenaar een "passcode" (pincode of wachtwoord) gebruikt om de iPhone of iPad te ontgrendelen - en er GÉÉN biometrie is geconfigureerd;

ofwel:

• De gebruiker wel biometrie kan gebruiken om het scherm te ontgrendelen, doch in 'Instellingen' > 'Touch ID en toegangscode' de instelling "Autom. invullen wachtw." is UITgezet.

Probleem: iedereen met toegang tot de ontgrendelde iPhone of iPad kan dan, *zonder* opnieuw lokaal te hoeven authenticeren:

1) Op elke website inloggen waarvan het user-ID en wachtwoord in iCloud Keychain zijn opgeslagen;

2) Met passkeys op enkele specifieke websites inloggen (waaronder https://account.apple.com en https://icloud.com), namelijk als volgt:

a) Open de website;
b) Druk op "Inloggen";
c) Druk op de "x" rechts bovenaan de pop-up die verschijnt (in de onderste schermhelft);
d) Druk kort in het veld waar om het e-mailadres gevraagd wordt;
e) Druk op de knop "gebruik passkey".

Risico: uitlenen van een unlocked iDevice (o.a. aan kinderen) maar ook diefstal nadat de passcode is afgekeken. Of als de dief geen passcode heeft, als deze wacht tot de eerstvolgende iOS/iPadOS kwetsbaarheid bekend wordt waarbij de schermontgrendeling omzeild kan worden.

I still had an old #iPad 4 lying around which was no longer really usable. So I extracted the display panel, got myself an AliExpress display controller for this panel and designed a case to have a second screen. Now I just have to print it.

Ok this is clever. Flow for iPad can use your iPhone as a tool tray, offloading everything so your iPad is 100% canvas for drawing.

The feature is called Pencil Case, and yes Flow asked for permission to check for other devices on my network to run this feature, which I initially thought was sus.

A friend of mine with severe #dementia possibly had their #iPhone and #iPad compromised by a #scammer. I've offered to do some basic #forensics on it, and ensure there is no rouge software, change passwords, etc.

I am not, however, an #apple person, so I'm not really sure what the best tools will be to do so.

I had an interesting exchange at the Apple Store with a pretty smart young man selling us an iPad yesterday. He mentioned that with the next model up we could get Apple AI. I had been trying to avoid this purchase for a while (years at this point), but my daughter's 7 year old iPad is simply not working anymore.

His pitch was that the AI can listen to lectures and create a summary for me so that I could study later (which, I gather, means to use more AI later to write an essay).At this point, I had to remark that I wasn't interested in AI both as a professor and as an environmentalist. He defended Apple by saying they have a mission to be carbon neutral by 2030 and the reason for that timeframe is so they can do it right. I respectfully disagreed, stating these delays are usually implemented to allow the public to forget and that Apple's whole business model has been based on planned obsolescence. He disagreed, so I looked it up. Sure enough, this is what I found.
