A new phone in my holster means a new camera as well. Let’s see how it changes your view of my world.
Going out for a thirty minute walk eight minutes before sunrise makes for a range of lighting conditions. These three shots only kind of show what I’m talking about. Kind of.
The #aurora came south again! This is an unedited shot straight out of the #iPhone16ProMax camera app on default settings (which gave a 3 second shutter).
Don’t let light pollution discourage you: phone cameras (even the viewfinder) can see it better than the naked eye. And keep checking: it comes and goes.
There’s another chance tonight. The closer to midnight the better. Check all directions, but north is best.

I am thinking of getting an iphone 16 pro / pro max
Since my Pixel 7 keeps overheating, even shutting down due to the heat.
However I am wondering if anyone here has any pictures and perhaps opinions on the Natural or black titanium coulours?
Does the black scratch easier?
And is there anything else I should be aware of before purchasing this phone?
4/ The extra zoom is nice too, but I want to see what happens to the photos between 1x and 5x. Will have to do some experiments there - I find ~2x to be a very useful range. 3x was sometimes too much, so 5x will almost certainly have the same problem.
3/ Having a dedicated button to launch the camera is nice. I like it being a shutter release too. If it is going to have other functions, I would prefer to have a way to set the function I want that to start with on launch, rather than having it remember the last thing is did there. Perhaps that is a setting somewhere…
Having played with a few of the options, I think exposure compensation is likely to be where I leave it most of the time.
2/ The computational aperture control (not in portrait mode, just on the regular “Photo” mode) is awful. The only interesting thing is being able to change it after the fact. The three photos below are f/6.3, f/14 and Off. The last one is the only usable one making the whole feature pointless.
Even worse, the live preview is a hot mess with blur all over the place, sometimes even where you tap to focus.
More thoughts on the iPhone 16 pro camera changes…
1/ The button. First comment is that whoever worked on the mechanical design for the half press needs to be given a real camera to feel how that works. This is nothing like a half press, and it is very difficult to get without a full press. And double half pressing is the most ridiculous thing ever. Personally, I would disable the half press on this hardware.

A short thread playing around with the iPhone 16 Pro camera settings. This first one shows a shot using the wide angle and then the 5X zoom. #iPhone16Pro #iPhone16ProPhotography
After wiping my old iPhone 14 Pro, I realized I’d not cancelled the monthly AppleCare+ subscription.
Is there a way to cancel it on a website somewhere? I looked through my subscriptions on my new iPhone 16 Pro and it wasn’t there to cancel. I *could* see my NEW AppleCare+ subscription for the new phone in settings.
I finally booted into my old phone and set it up as far as I needed to so I could cancel it on that phone, so all is good. #iphone16pro #ios18 #applecareplus
How do you build one single camera that can please everyone, all the time? Apple’s thesis is, apparently, to make everyone else do the work. Writing for @theverge Allison Johnson recently tested the iPhone 16 camera, and the flood of new options gave her “a kind of vertigo.” Read more of Johnson’s thoughts after she spent over a week with the device: https://flip.it/zBjxp_
