A nice thing about living in Germany is that Bärlauch (wild garlic, ramsons) is pretty widespread during the spring
But unlike in NL & the UK, many people here pick it to eat, so there’s strong competition to find good patches before it has all been taken
Still, I managed to find some & have made my first batch of pesto for the year. Always good
We may not have been able to see yesterday’s total lunar eclipse here in central Europe, but I’ll take tonight’s Moon as a compensation
Good night everyone & remember that we are all just ephemeral refugees from the same cosmic recycling bin

The moon through the trees last January. Overcast skies thwarted my hopes of capturing the lunar eclipse last night, but it’s nice to be reminded that the moon is gorgeous anytime.

A nice view of Mercury, the innermost planet in our solar system, between Venus & the city lights of Mannheim on this early spring evening
As seen from 566m elevation atop the Teltschikturm on the Schriesheimer Kopf above Wilhelmsfeld in the Odenwald
Despite the murk, I was able to follow it down to <1° above the horizon.
Better DSLR photos to follow
The Colours of Sirius – Day 2
A bit more progress in capturing the beautiful colours that the brightest star in the sky shows due to atmospheric turbulence, constantly changing the wavelength-dependent refractive index along the line of sight
This time with my defocussed 15x70 binoculars, filmed with my iPhone at 120 fps (so slowed down by 4 x).
Will try again tonight with the 3 x tele lens, if I can line it up / get any photons
A very pretty conjunction between the Moon & Venus in clear cold skies this evening
There was some excellent earthshine to be seen, sunlight reflected off the Atlantic lighting up the otherwise dark part of the Moon
And it was easy to see that Venus was a crescent, with sunlight striking it in pretty much the same as it was hitting the Moon
Wide-field: iPhone
Close-ups: DSLR + 200m lens
Here’s an old photo I took of a harvested field in Idaho. Thinking fondly of Ukraine for no particular reason.

Framing the moon (an occasional series).
Here’s a crescent moon in honor of the beginning of Ramadan for those who celebrate.
