Working on my next #printerSolstice print for the prompt oxygen- another woman who was there and involved in the chemical revolution and development of the idea that burning might be due to an element that got named oxygen rather than a substance possessed by combustible things called phlogiston.

Chemist, mineralogist, meteorologist and scientific translator Claudine Picardet…

How did I not know this??? 🤯 🤓 Most ordinary porcelain is basically mullite and glass. 😊 Mullite - first found in nature in samples from Mull, and named by Norman Bowen, and co-workers, in 1924. Although rare in nature, it is a ubiquitous material in industrial and other ceramics. #Mull #Mullite #Mineralogy #Geology #Porcelain #ceramics

PS pdf of Bowen et al's paper available on the superb rruff website: rruff.info/uploads/JWAS14_183.

#MinCup24 rhodochrosite vs calcite

Got to be calcite: a great mineral - it can grow igneously, sedimentarily, metamorphically, or biologically; it's a wonderful recorder of processes and time 🤓 , it has unmatched diversity and beauty of crystal forms AND it can do pink even better than rhodochrosite!🤩

You can browse endless pages of calcite crystal forms 🤩 🥰 here:

#Quartz is piezoelectric due to its symmetry (its lack of a center of inversion): if you squeeze quartz it creates an electrical potential across the sides (likkewise an applied voltage distorts the crystal). This can be used to create a resonator that vibrates at a set frequency. Here's a Soviet-era quartz crystal compared to a modern equivalent (blue arrow).

Before digital radios, we used to swap out crystals to change frequencies in field radios.

Well, I finally managed to make an account here. I'm a geologist, mineral lover, and curator of mineralogy at the Natural History Museum in London. You might know me as @NadWGab over on Twitter (twitter.com/NadWGab) which is my main account for now.
