What caused the damage to this tree's bark in this patterned fashion? Was the lower rupture likely made by the same force?

Putting these questions to all the woodspeople, forest folk, ecologists, biologists, botanists, entomologists, and other science hippies in the Fediverse. Please scratch my itch 🙏

The upper area appears to have a repetitive pattern, possibly caused by an insect or animal, or perhaps from a tool. The lower area is a larger, irregular wound.
