InstaVolt extends off-peak charging hours from 20:00-07:00. This must make it very appealing to anybody who doesn't have AC charging options... some of our neighbours just charge once a week at the council charger -this will provide a alternative option nearby with two more charging bays and more reliability.

This makes a lot of sense for them: I've already invested the capital in the chargers and back-end systems, this should keep the chargers busy during quiet times and if it causes some people to reschedule their charging -that provides more capacity at peak times.

Petrol stations never reduce their fuel prices at offbeat times or when it is sunny or windy.

InstaVolt's Winchester charging station is coming together, placed perfectly for a trip to Portsmouth and back.
As well as 30+ car bays, they are adding drive-through bays for people towing their caravans from London to the south coast

They've 500 kW of solar + a 4 MWh battery. They can store their electricity until needed – & in winter they can charge it with off peak power.

They're even adding things like a play area for kids & a café. This is the future of motorway service stations

Despite what Farage and Reform might claim,

"The #NetZero sector is growing three times faster than the overall #UK economy, analysis has found, providing high-wage jobs across the country while cutting climate-heating emissions and increasing energy security.

Net zero businesses accounted for 1.1% of the UK’s total GVA, making it bigger than the farming and advertising and market research sectors." And growing fast.

A tidal lagoon near Minehead sounds interesting
-close to Hinkley C so already being wired up for grid in integration
-a lot less environmentally destructive than the Severn Estuary Barrage
-A lot less expensive
-Being tidal, the only way you would not get your predicted electricity would be if the moon disappeared.
-if you start building it ASAP -it will probably be ready before Hinkley C
The S/W of England depends on tourism. If this could be done in a way which actually improves tourism, it could be beneficial.

They were looking at doing something like this near Cardiff over a decade ago -I don't remember why it was never started. I think it is time to revisit this.

@thanetric @ChrisMayLA6 the problem with this is that it traps 80% on fossil gas, a victim of the international gas market -and either relying on fossil fuel companies claims of CCS enabling them to generate zero CO2 H2 -call as willing to dedicate much of the renewable energy infrastructure we need to build into hydrogen manufacture.

Stanford University has some great talks on this – their point of view is that Hydrogen -be in homes or as a transport fuel doesn't work, except in some niche cases. Hydrogen for homes it simply the fossil fuel industry pretending it can be business as usual for them in a zero CO2 world -and therefore what that current and ongoing investments will retain their value.

@Wen given the car manufacturers pay penalties if they don't ship enough EVs, maybe LHR & others (LGW, BRS,..) could be given a timeline and penalties for "Net Zero Jet Fuel" use. If they genuinely believed that fantasy-they'd have no reason not to accept it.

Hey #renewableEnergy Mastodon, for a piece of work I'm doing, I wonder if anyone can point me towards global/regional/country targets/ambitions for #floatingOffshoreWind deployment by 2050?

The only global number I can find is 264GW from DNV, but RenewablesUK say there is already a global pipeline of 266GW and WindEurope expect between 100 and 150GW of floating wind in Europe, both of which suggest the DNV number might be a bit low.
Thanks
