Macro black and white photograph of a drop of water hanging down and ready to fall, at the tip of a small twig with two leaf buds still dormant. Another branch with a drop are blurred behind, acting as bokeh in a darker background.

It is still early spring here in the hills, and apart from snow, ice, water and mud, nothing else is moving. There is no colour either, apart from white, grey and brown. Light is what is left.

I was happy to be comfortable inside with a cup of tea in my hands. This bright red cardinal showed up. I am not well equipped for bird photography and it was a dull red in colour. I prefer to let others post extraordinary photos of birds and went for the moody and grey feeling of the day.

I'm unsure at this point where I took this. I'd originally thought it came from my road trip between Portland and San Francisco in 2017, but I didn't have my 5x7 at that point. So 2018 is a guess, and the location a mystery.

Printed on warm tone paper from a paper negative that was a bit overexposed (hard to do, as it takes a long time to get a good exposure on darkroom paper).

a vertically-oriented black and white photo. Seemingly deep in a forest, very tall redwood trees occupy the entire frame. They're so tall that both their bottoms and tops are hidden. Overexposed, the sky has no detail. Sunlight reflects off the tree leaves.

Macro black and white photograph of drops of water falling between tree roots, sparkling in the sunlight.

With trees growing on the side of a hill, there is often a space created just under their base on the lower side, where their roots are showing and hanging in the air, especially in Spring with erosion and the low vegetation not grown yet. The water coming down the hills from the melting snow finds its way to these spaces, and follows the roots to fall magically like rain in the sun. It's the merry sound it makes that drew me there, with my rain boots filled with snow and water falling on my head, crouched uncomfortably once again under a tree.
