Renée Burton<p>Today is a great day to be a visible trans/non-binary ally. You don’t need to be loud to be visible. </p><p>Remember the Kevin Bacon game? We’re all a lot more connected than we think. </p><p>Your actions with employees, colleagues, family, friends, and neighbors all matter. Not just directly, but in a six degrees of separation way. </p><p>On this International Day of Trans Visibility, what we need is for allies to be visible. </p><p>Here are some ways you can be a visible ally: </p><p>* Remember the underground railway? Strategically places stickers, signs, buttons all can show you are an ally. Since more bigots don’tn recognize an ally flag, you can use those. You don’t need to paint a trans flag on the front of your house, but it’s an option! <br>* Practice “echoing” language. Don’t want to share pronouns? That’s fine. But why do you need to know others? Try echoing the language they use. If someone says, “my kid is in college”, say “what college are they at?”…. if you say, “do you have any kids?” and they say “yes, one.”.. Say, “where are they now?”. … if they mention their partner, try “what does your partner do?”. <br>* If you “mess up” pronouns, correct yourself and move on. <br>* Talk amongst yourselves. Discussing trans and non-binary issues among small groups of friends is a positive way to influence others and to help grow allies. The more connected people feel to the queer community, the more allies there will be. <br>* Groups like PFLAG have regular ally and education sessions virtually across the country where you and your friends can learn allyship. Owen Bowdler<p>To celebrate TDoV I thought it might be nice to share my own transition timeline as a nonbinary person. <br>It's been fun putting the photos together and seeing just how non-linear it's been. There were some fairly major swings at the start and though they settled down, it's certainly not stopped.<br>I've long since given up trying to pin down exactly what my gender is and just been embracing whatever feels right day-by-day, will be interesting to see where it goes next!<br>[There's 9 years across these photos, of which I've been out for 6.5 & on HRT for 4.5]</p><p>Being a visibly queer, trans (& enamel pin-wearing in case that part wasn't obvious) postgrad student at uni has also been really rewarding, being able to show younger students that they're safe to be themselves. <br>I can also strongly vouch for wearing pins on your lanyard! </p><p>A little over a year ago I received an email from a younger postgrad who wasn't yet out, but had noticed my pins and wanted to know if it would be okay to talk about what it's like being a trans student & scientist - of course I said yes.<br>We've been having little catch-ups ever since and getting to see her grow into into a confident woman & scientist has been absolutely wonderful.<br>And of course, that means another person rocking some trans pride pins for someone else to ask about!</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/tdov" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tdov</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/transdayofvisibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transdayofvisibility</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/nonbinary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nonbinary</span></a></p>
