Curiosity Drive 🚐(2/2) LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold. Bedroom in a farmer’s retirement home, 1619 (📷1). Bürgerhaus (Haus Stahl) was a town house representing wealthy merchants/ tradesmen built 1730/ shown as in ~1860; in simpler examples doors opened fully to allow carts to load/ unload inside (📷2). Herrenhaus (Schönhof) was a manor house, built 1720/ shown as in 1800 (📷3). Curiosity Drive 🚐Images from an evening stroll around historic Detmold, which we found rather pretty despite urban restoration works. The palace is a Renaissance-era castle, reflecting its former role as capital of the Principality of Lippe. Curiosity Drive 🚐Seen from Ransburg ~4km away, Hermannsdenkmal on Grotenburg (📷1) commemorates Cheruscan chieftain Arminius, a "man (Mann) of the army (Heer)" in Latin, b. ~17 BCE. He united many Germanic tribes against the Romans attempting to conquer them & in 9 CE the “barbarian” was victorious over Varus in Teutoburger Wald (📷2). Envisaged as a symbol of German strength & unity, the 1875 monument (📷3) has been controversial. Unfortunately we can’t be sure what they are, except for the last one, which is Fliegenpilz | Amanita muscaria | fly agaric. We’d observed this one in <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/NZ" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#NZ</a>, where it has been unintentionally introduced. Curiosity Drive 🚐On a walk from Externsteine to Falkenburg we gained some elevation for views over the local landscape around Holzhausen-Externsteine (📷1). Continuing on through the forest, several Damhirsch | Dama dama | European fallow deer crossed the path in front of us (📷2). At Falkenburg is the ruin of a medieval hill-top castle (📷3); in the distance is Hermannsdenkmal. Curiosity Drive 🚐Die Externsteine are formed from sandstone laid down during the early Creataceous ~100mya. By about 70mya the layers had folded so they became vertical. The outcrop weathered into 13 pillars, now at the edge of an artificial pond (📷1). Many have beeen reshaped & bridged so tourists can traipse all over them (📷2&3). Curiosity Drive 🚐A wet day. We decided to seek out Feuersalamander | fire salamander, said to be found along the 6km Patensteig loop walk from Extertal. The signage was encouraging (📷1); they do come out in rain—but are typically nocturnal & would have been difficult to spot with all the fallen yellow autumn leaves around (😔 we saw none). Curiosity Drive 🚐The taste of Christmas is available year-round in Borgholzhausen, home to purveyors of Lebkuchen | gingerbread, Leb und Honigkuchen Heinrich Schulze (📷1); this is their Hausmischung | house mix. Schoko-Küsse are chocolate-coated marshmallows (📷2). On the outskirts is ruin of 11–12th C. Burg Ravensberg; the drop shape of the 19m tall keep with 2.5m thick walls is unusual (📷3). Curiosity Drive 🚐9km loop walk from Stellplatz in Borgholzhausen, in Teutoburger Wald | Teutoburg Forest—an area of partially-forested low hills. Luisenturm was erected in 1893 but current 16m tower built after WWII & offers views out over Naturpark TERRA.vita/ surrounding farms (📷1&2); the hill was a Cold War missile fire control centre & radar station.
