Stefano Marinelli<p>Mastodon will no longer support Redis Namespaces. The reasons are fully valid. Redis (or, more specifically, Valkey or KeyDB) is lightweight software that is easy to install/manage, so separation is always a good thing. <br>However, I read that many admins will face problems because they use Redis "in the cloud" and, therefore, have a single instance. Unfortunately, this is also a side effect of the "cloud," meaning the loss of control over your own software. </p><p>On FreeBSD, a thin jail with "Redis" takes up very little space and resources. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a> – in the long run – always pays off.</p><p><a href="https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/discussions/34198" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/mastodon/mastodon/d</span><span class="invisible">iscussions/34198</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SelfHosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHosting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/RunBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RunBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/FreeBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreeBSD</span></a></p>

Stefano Marinelli<p>UPDATE: I haven't seen Recall in action there. I was just asking the doctor how they'll deal with it.</p><p>This morning, I went to the doctor for a scheduled appointment. While she was looking at the results of blood tests from two years ago on the screen (and suggested repeating them for a follow-up), I realized she was using Windows 11. A detail came to mind. The doctor is extremely polite and friendly, so I asked her, "How do you handle the feature called Recall?" The doctor was taken aback and had no idea what I was talking about. I was about to drop the conversation, but she, being a serious professional, immediately called the technicians who manage their PCs to ask for clarification. They downplayed it, saying it's not an issue and that it's a feature "on all PCs, so we can't do anything about it." She started to express that she didn’t like it and wanted it deactivated. No luck: they won’t proceed because, according to them, even deactivating it is "a hack that could compromise future updates." She’s furious and will talk to her colleagues and the decision-makers. She wants secure systems because "there’s patient data involved."</p><p>In reality, patient data is stored on servers (which I haven't investigated), but everything that appears on the screen is, in my opinion, at risk. </p><p>I’ve offered to help them find a solution—because, if I'm right, all they need is LibreOffice and a browser. In that case, I’ll suggest one of the *BSD or Linux systems and do it for free. </p><p>I don’t want to make money off my doctor. I just want patient data to be (sufficiently) secure.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/IT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IT</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Recall" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Recall</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Windows</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Security" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Security</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Privacy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/RunBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RunBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a></p>

Stefano Marinelli<p>Saturday relaxation: I'm doing some tests to see if I could use the Google Pixel 7 with GrapheneOS - and without Google services - as my main phone. I've solved many of the issues:</p><p>- F-Droid for downloading main apps<br>- Aurora Store for Play Store apps<br>- For push notifications, I already have the ntfy server on my own server. By using UnifiedPush, many apps can use it<br>- Tusky (or moshidon) perfectly supports UnifiedPush (although I usually have notifications turned off for social apps)<br>- FluffyChat and Element support UnifiedPush and work well on my server<br>- Whatsapp works perfectly with the Matrix bridge, so I don't need to install it<br>- Mercurygram for Telegram perfectly supports notifications via UnifiedPush<br>- For email, I'm unsure whether to keep a separate connection (also to receive email notifications if my ntfy server is down) or use NotiMail to redirect them to UnifiedPush<br>- 2FAS Auth for 2FA</p><p>I will probably create a profile with Google services only for the apps that strictly require them, but it won't run in the background and I'll only use it when needed. For example, everything related to banking apps comes to mind.</p><p>Some apps remain out, mainly intercom apps. However, I could integrate them into Home Assistant and use that for sending notifications.</p><p>Yes, I think I could use a device daily without Google services, being fully in control of my data.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Pixel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pixel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/GooglePixel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GooglePixel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/GrapheneOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrapheneOS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a></p>
Stefano Marinelli<p>For a long time, I have had GrapheneOS on my Google Pixel 7 - which I don't use anymore as my main phone, but it's almost always on. It has some apps, but mainly, a constant connection to my email. No SIM card, connected via Wi-Fi.</p><p>I've always noticed a battery drain of about 4-5% overnight, sometimes even more, despite not having notifications and not using it.</p><p>Last night, I decided to remove Google Services. In 24 hours (and a few minutes of usage), it consumed 2% of the battery.</p><p>I'm trying to understand how much I need Google Services for my needs. The main messaging systems I currently use are bridged with Matrix, and on Element, I have notifications via ntfy (unified push).</p><p>In the coming days, I will try to see if it's possible for me to do without them.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/GooglePixel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GooglePixel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Pixel7" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pixel7</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Android</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/GrapheneOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrapheneOS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/MobileExperience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MobileExperience</span></a></p>
