#CoerciveControl is a useful concept for making visible the abuses of #power that can occur in hierarchical relationships.

We now see them more easily in #families, #cults & other institutions. Perhaps our next step is to see how people raised in relations of hierarchy learn that the only way to be safe is to either become the biggest #bully in the room or to appease that bully.

So many of the people who achieve power in our #political & other institutions appear to operate like this. While bullying behaviour is seen as normal, or even valorised as a characteristic of alpha masculinity, our cultural framing rules (what we’re allowed to say) & feeling rules (what we’re allowed to feel) obscure it from view. The consequences of a bully’s actions are seen as resulting from the personal failings of those who are harmed. Naming this dynamic becomes a dangerous act.

Sound familiar?

What if our culture‘s assumed hierarchy of human value is mistaken? What if this way of making sense of the world harms us more than it protects? What if we are all connected & our wellbeing depends on the wellbeing of others?

When bullies win, everyone loses. I say yay to every way we make this visible.

In a filing ~45 mins after the deadline had passed, #DOJ lawyers wrote:

“In light of the insufficient amount of time afforded to review the Supreme Court’s Order following the dissolution of the administrative stay in this case, Defendants are not in a position where they 'can’ share any information requested by the Court. That is the reality.”

This is another escalation of the #Trump admin’s refusal to acknowledge the #equal #power of the #JudicialBranch.

In that famously hot, stuffy room in Philadelphia, windows closed for the sake of secrecy, they sweated & argued about how to limit the powers of the American executive. They arrived at the idea of dividing #power between different branches of govt. As James Madison wrote in “Federalist No. 47”: “The accumulation of all powers, #legislative, #executive, & #judiciary in the same hands…may justly be pronounced the very definition of #tyranny.”

The #Trump admin Wednesday asked #SCOTUS to allow the president to remove a pair of #independent #regulators whose cases have broad implications for at least two dozen other agencies, including the #FederalReserve Board, & for how the federal govt operates.

Trump has moved aggressively to seize greater control of the bureaucracy, ousting independent #watchdogs & removing the two #Democrats on the #FTC, which protects #consumers from deceptive practices & monopoly #power.
