Echoes of Stillness

As I look around at the treetops, I notice the delicate interplay of light and shadow. Upon closer examination, these subtle shifts often unveil birds and other wildlife. In this instance, the treetop became a temporary haven for a group of goldfinches. Though the small flock was too distant and the morning light too faint to capture much detail, I chose to present the scene in black and white—offering a vignette-style cameo of the birds.

The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Take a look:

I need to get a haircut, but since today is Wednesday, my barber is closed. Funny enough, I had the exact same thought last Wednesday—yet here I am. It takes a bit of effort to clean up, get in my car, and drive the 15 minutes to the barbershop. Haircuts used to be a necessity for me, but now they’re more of an option, something I only consider when my hair starts bothering me. Honestly, it’s too gray and too thin in places to fuss much about appearances. A short cut around the sides is practical, though, as it doesn’t interfere with my hearing aids. Anyway, long hair and bell-bottoms are mostly out of style.

I was up at five this morning, thanks to Ben who positioned himself outside our bedroom door and issued a bark every few seconds or so. I got up and let the dogs out - in case you're wondering who. When they came back inside, I kicked back in my recliner and went back to sleep until about seven when Charlie started getting antsy, bumping my chair and moving from one side of the chair to the other sticking his nose close enough to my head that I could feel his breath. It was still 30 minutes till mealtime, and he wouldn't leave me alone. Commands of "get in bed" and "get in the kennel" only bought a minute or less of respite until he was back. I kept my eyes closed.

Today is a travel day for us and I'm up way too early. It's weird because there are things that need to be done before we leave, and I can't roust up a sense of urgency. I tried last night but it was to no avail. I suppose I should get cleaned up pretty soon, I need to drop Ben and Charlie off for boarding with the Veterinarian. I also need to check the tire pressure on the car we will be traveling in, something that I've been meaning to do all week. What I want to do is go back to sleep. 💤

Oh, we're headed to Georgia for the annual Thanksgiving gathering, but will stop for a day in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Early Arriving Herons by Debra Martz
Being out at the lake at #dawn is so quiet and #peaceful. Not a sound is heard until the first #birds arrive for morning feedings. Two Great Blue #Herons were the first I noticed landing on the lower #river area beyond the lake's spillway, colored #orange by the morning light. It's too dark to see their colors, but their #silhouettes are unmistakable.
