This was taken a few months ago when we still had snow on the spruce trees.

Normally in Fairbanks we dont get a lot of snow. The storms that dump snow along the coast and partial interior mountain ranges usually have very little left by the time they reach the interior. What it does give us is cold temps and clear skies, which is perfect for holding the little snow we do get, and having great aurora viewing.

This winter started out normal, but over the past few months we have had consistent warm temperatures and wind, which has removed all the snow from our usually laden trees.

I always am on the lookout for aurora images using terrestrial nature as a foreground, up here that is mainly trees. So when I discovered this little pocket a few meters away from my winter cabin when I moved in, I was ecstatic.

But getting a corona framed directly overhead of this pocket was another thing. Since I’m out on tours most nights, I rarely have time to do any shooting at my house. And usually when I do, I get so caught up in the moment, that by the time I realize it would be a good view from “the spruce pocket”, it’s too late. But on this night I was ready for it and wow what a show. Personally this is one of my favorite images from this winter as it is the culmination of a lot of planning and patience.

In my off season this past fall, I decided to go to Kauai and go backpacking all over the island. Coming from Alaska it was quite pleasant to wear shorts constantly and have good fresh fruit everywhere you went. While I was camping on the west side of the island I decided to pull the camera out and get some Milky Way shots. What I totally forgot about was the #comet C/2023 A3 passing by our planet.

The hooting and hollering that I made when I first looked at the image could be heard for miles.

The upper part of the cloud is lit up from the moon rising behind the island creating a very pleasing image.
I am shooting this on a #sony A7iii with a 20mm f1.8 lens. 30” exposure, iso 1250

Hey there folks. I’m an aurora guide in Fairbanks and am new to this app. I’d like to share some photos from this past winter.

What we are looking at here is what’s known as a corona, or a breakup. This shot is looking straight up above me. These intense formations often last for only a minute or two but are absolutely beautiful to see. Huge amounts of energy is being converted to visual light, much like how a neon light works.
The different colors you see here are oxygen (green) and nitrogen (purple) as these solar particles crash into our atmosphere.

If you have any questions about how to see Aurora, or anything else feel free to hit me up. Cheers!

Last week, I captured the stunning beauty of crocus flowers, their soft petals glistering in the Sun. I got closer and photographed the small details of pollen in the heart of this crocus - they look like little orange pearls ✨

Shall we zoom in? Swipe left! 🔍

I had a lot of folks show me the photos they took of the moon on their phones from last night. Phones are getting better each year, but my Sony A7r V shows there still isn't a replacement yet for an SLR/DSLR, a good lens, and a little bit of knowledge. Exposure bracketing made this one of the best moon photos I have ever taken.

Our tent in a winter storm. High winds are especially dangerous during winter hikes, as they efficiently remove body heat, which can lead to frostbite or even hypothermia. They can also affect visibility, making navigation and movement difficult. If the winds get too strong, pitching a tent might become impossible, so it's important to be aware of the situation.

A week later, it's time to start sharing some of the photographs I captured during the Entrudo of Lazarim. For five intense days, I had the privilege of photographing various "caretos" (traditional masked figures) in different parts of the village, capturing the essence of this unique tradition, one of the most genuine and traditional carnivals in Portugal.
As a son of this land, the Entrudo represents for me more than just a simple festivity—it's something that brings pride to all people of Lazarim, an event that brings life to the village, something that attracts thousands of visitors to our land. For me, it's also a unique opportunity to strengthen the bonds with my homeland and its rich tradition. Each mask, each ritual, each moment of irreverence brings back memories of the various Entrudos I've experienced; it's also living proof of the effort, creativity, and strength of the people of Lazarim who pass this tradition from generation to generation.
My passion for photography was fostered in this very Entrudo, and now by photographically documenting it, I aim to preserve these memories and help promote the cultural richness that is the Entrudo of Lazarim.

Caretos are colorful masked figures found in northern Portugal and parts of Spain (mainly Trás-os-Montes and Galicia). These characters are the main subject of winter and spring festivals, especially Carnival.
They wear distinctive costumes with bright colors and fringes, some with wooden or leather masks with exaggerated features, and sometimes they carry noisemakers like bells or rattles. During celebrations, they run through villages creating chaos and playfully teasing onlookers.
