Today was sunny with the odd shower, which made for some nice light and skies at Magor Marsh in South Wales.

Pictured is a sculpture of an 18th century 'brinker' - one who lived beside a 'reen' (drainage channel) in the marsh and was responsible for maintaining the bank. The brinker has nest boxes built into her pockets and was created by local willow-workers, Sarah Hatton and Melanie Bastier.

The sculpture described above is a large wicker-work figure of a woman in long dress and broad-brimmed hat, wielding a scythe to trim the banks of the reen. Her hat is just a frame, possibly picked clean of twigs by nesting birds. She stands in a small wooden-fenced enclosure, reflected in the still waters of the reen. Behind the figure, an open expanse of grasses and reeds is lit by the hazy afternoon sun, backed by a woodland of willows and other deciduous trees, and a distant wind turbine. A bank of low cumulous clouds, dark with rain, float in a blue sky, lit from above, depositing a shower on distant fields beyond the woods.

#MarshMadness Day 16!

I am sorry I am running out of marshy goodness....but enjoy my pup sitting by a marsh! I love the little yellow flowers, I probably should have taken some macro photos for ID purposes. Huh. Whoops.

Also I must be cool because I got Nicole'd! (One of those "hey be my friends I'm a lonely fediverse chick" accounts that is spam.)

Lots of various plants, we can make out some native cane, little yellow flowers of some kind, and cattails, and see greenish marshy water in the background. Front left in focus is a white and brown australian shepherd sitting, looking a little annoyed about being asked to sit and stay in the hot sun.

Last wednesday evening in the polder. Spent about three hours after work rummaging around in the wetlands. A great way to release tension and get your thoughts in order.
The clouds looked menacing, but instead of following through on their threats, they treated me to some pretty sunharps and lights. I did not even get rained up even once. Lucky lady, I am :)

Sorry for lack of posting for a few days, had field work (surprising, I know!) and so I made the most of a few days to study the Earth, leaving my computer at home.

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled #MarshMadness ! It is now day 13! Enjoy this pretty marsh landscape on the edge of a forest from the southern US.

There is so much beauty here, so much life to protect, where the EPA is weakened let's get our states to step up! Nature access is bipartisan, everyone wants to partake, so make sure to be contacting even your republican reps on these issues. The only ones who want to destroy it are the billionaires.

Looking through a break in the trees (oak, pine, and I'm not sure what is on the right, maybe ash?) to a large wetland area full of grasses. The green carpet of long grasses and plants stretches out for a long ways until the sparkly blue water beyond - still with springs of green in it due to its shallow nature. The other side fades into the distance, but you can tell there are grasses there too, before a small rise in landscape has more forest beyond. The sky is a bit overexposed but you can tell it is a bright blue sky day with puffy white clouds that are almost cartoon like in their cotton ball perfection.

I arrive in predawn darkness to venture into the Fernhill Wetlands preserve. My eyes glance upward to the nighttime sky already graying in the east. The moon pushes night toward the western horizon, fleeing the advent of morning light. My ears catch the dim hum of traffic hanging at the edges of quiet.

#MarshMadness Day 5

A proper marsh! yeah some dead trees in the back but the foreground area is all proper marsh! Technically, marshes are wetlands dominated by grasses and similar herbaceous plants, whereas swamps are wetlands dominated by woody plants (trees). In case you wondered the difference...but they are both types of wetlands so I say join in the hashtag fun of Marsh Madness if you have anything somewhat fitting!

A flat wetland area surrounded by low greenery and some taller green grasses and sedges. The sky is really blue! There is a forest on a rising hill in the extreme background, and on the edge of the marsh there is some standing dead trees that provide some interesting habitat.

Retired, married many decades, recently moved to a blue state. I mostly boost an eclectic mix of others toots.
