David Castleton (Author)<p>London's Horniman Museum (opened 1901) was established by Frederick John Horniman, a wealthy tea merchant. His daughter Annie persuaded him to appoint Samuel Liddell Mathers as its curator. Both Annie and Mathers were members of the occult organisation The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, whose members included W.B. Yeats, Bram Stoker and Aleister Crowley. Mathers' influence still pervades the museum, whose exhibits include shamanic masks, Devatara cards (a possible Indian ancestor of the tarot), and magical implements from Africa, Australia, Asia and Europe. The museum also contains a mummy that Mathers reputedly tried to bring to life. <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/folklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>folklore</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/occult" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>occult</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/wierd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wierd</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/psychogeography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychogeography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/museums" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>museums</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/London" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>London</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/mythology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mythology</span></a></p>
