JaakkoOur tent in a winter storm. High winds are especially dangerous during winter hikes, as they efficiently remove body heat, which can lead to frostbite or even hypothermia. They can also affect visibility, making navigation and movement difficult. If the winds get too strong, pitching a tent might become impossible, so it's important to be aware of the situation.<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/nature?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#nature</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/winterhike?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#winterhike</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/camping?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#camping</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/outdoors?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#outdoors</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/safetyfirst?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#safetyfirst</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/winterstorm?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#winterstorm</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/hiking?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hiking</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/adventure?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#adventure</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/wilderness?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wilderness</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/survival?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#survival</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/frostbite?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#frostbite</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/hypothermia?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hypothermia</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/navigation?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#navigation</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/photography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#photography</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/sonyalpha?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#sonyalpha</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/fjells?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#fjells</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/mountains?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#mountains</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/hilleberg?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hilleberg</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/kaitum3gt?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#kaitum3gt</a>

Jason 🛥️🏄‍♂️<p>Also cleaned off my truck while I was at it in case I need to play later. So happy I invested in the new locks with covers for the GFC camper. So easy to access and get in, even after the locks were covered in snow. This exact situation used to leave snow in the locks, freezing them. I could only get on dumping hot water or deicer on the lock. So much easier now!<br><a href="https://photog.social/tags/winterstorm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winterstorm</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/blair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blair</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/winterstormblair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winterstormblair</span></a></p>
Jason 🛥️🏄‍♂️<p>Water and waste ports cleared. Since the heat inside the boat rises, the bottom layer of snow quickly starts to turn into slush on the deck and will eventually become ice. To avoid this, I will be clearing these areas every hour or so while snow is heavy.</p><p>We also are shoveling our finger piers. Haven't heard anything from the marina management yet ... about the storm, their plan for eventually clearing a path on the docks. Silence.</p><p><a href="https://photog.social/tags/winterstorm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winterstorm</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/blair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blair</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/winterstormblair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winterstormblair</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/boating" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boating</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/boatlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boatlife</span></a></p>
Jason 🛥️🏄‍♂️<p>This is what it looked like on my Aft hardtop this morning. We had at least 4" overnight. I cleared both of my hard tops and then moved down to clearing access to my water and waste ports and the dock.</p><p><a href="https://photog.social/tags/winterstorm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winterstorm</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/blair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blair</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/winterstormblair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winterstormblair</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/boating" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boating</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/boatlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boatlife</span></a></p>

The Embodiment of RED :fire_t:<p>I'm glad my winter storm suggestions are getting some reach. I hope they help people feel safe, warm, and if we're all very lucky, <em>comfortable</em> as folks deal with severe weather. </p><p>A couple of addendums: </p><ul><li>When I talked about getting nitrile gloves, I wasn't very clear that they're to be used <em>in conjunction with</em> whatever winter gloves, mittens, etc. folks may have. Dry hands go into nitrile gloves–lightly coated with baby powder/cornstarch if one thinks their hands may be moist, or if they generally have trouble getting a hand in–and winter gloves go on over them. Rubber to keep skin dry; cloth, leather, etc. to keep hands warm.</li><li>I made much mention of baby wipes and paper towels, but none of <strong>trash bags</strong>. I expect you already have some; <em>you</em> should expect to go through them quickly. If you have a stash of plastic grocery sacks waiting for their chance to shine: this is it.</li><li>Many people are sharing an important key to effectively wearing layers: moisture-wicking inner layers, topped by a less permeable layer to prevent wind chill. It's good info, and not everyone has experience buying a windbreaker, so here are some tips. Choose leather outerwear if you have or can get it; it's obviously a solid piece of natural material, which means <em>NO SMALL HOLES FROM KNITTING/WEAVING THE FABRIC.</em> That's really one of the most salient things to look for; the tighter the knit or weave, the fewer opportunities wind and water have to penetrate.</li><li>If you go to a <strong>general purpose</strong> thrift store in one of the lower-income areas of your town, you have a solid shot at finding many things I suggested picking up. Even the camp stove and Coleman fuel (though if you don't have experience using one, you should buy new.) Windbreaker, though? Sweaters for layering? So long as you don't mind advertising some truck company or such, you can pick up the wardrobe you're missing. And you shouldn't mind–not when you're last-minute shopping for clothing and getting a 75% discount. </li></ul><p>Good luck. Stay smart. 💕<br><a href="https://hackers.town/tags/winter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winter</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/WinterStorm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WinterStorm</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/snowpocalypse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>snowpocalypse</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/blizzard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blizzard</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/ArcticBlast" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArcticBlast</span></a></p>

The Embodiment of RED :fire_t:<p><strong>About Me:</strong> I live in Houston, TX now, where a couple of years ago we lost power due to a freeze for <em>weeks</em>. Remember when Ted Cruz went to the Bahamas or whatever? That was then. Before I moved to Houston, I lived in Winnipeg, MB, Canada for several years, often called "Winterpeg" by other Canadians. Experienced temps of 40 below on more than one occasion. </p><p><strong>Suggestions:</strong></p><ul><li>FORGET stocking up on toilet paper. Buy unscented baby wipes. They clean your butt, your hands, your face, your pits, your bits, without needing any water from potentially frozen pipes. DO NOT FLUSH THEM, EVER, NO MATTER WHAT THE FUCKIN' PACKAGING SAYS.</li><li>BUY a single-burner camp stove that uses Coleman fuel/white gas. Not some shitty, compact thing designed for self-flagellating backpackers; a STOVE on which you can, if needed, rest the largest pot you own when it is full to the brim with water. If you need it, you'll have it. Also, as one might imagine, buy a couple canisters of fuel, anything you might need like connectors to make that fuel... well, fuel, the stove, and something to light the stove if it doesn't do it itself.</li><li>PROTECT any area of your body where blood vessels run close to the surface of the skin: hands, head, feet, inner elbows, backs of knees, EARS, NOSE, etc. You <strong>must NOT</strong> get these areas wet unless you can dry them thoroughly, and fabric towels do not dry things thoroughly. (Paper towels get close.) This may mean buying a big box of nitrile gloves if all you have are knit gloves, fabric mittens without water resistance, etc. This will CERTAINLY mean wearing a scarf, neck gaiter, or the like to cover your nose (which is perpetually moist inside), a hat or muffs to cover your ears. </li><li>HOT water bottle, and a funnel to fill it if you're not great at pouring things. It'll be great near your feet when you want to sleep; it's also great on one's lower back, near the kidneys and adrenal glands (<em>ad renal</em>, "to the kidneys"; I took Latin for two years and didn't put that shit together) when the cold stresses you out and floods your shivering self with cortisol.</li><li>DOLLAR store plastic tubs. At least three: one for soapy water, one for rinsing that soapy water off, and a third for a final rinse (&amp; sanitize if you wanna pick up sanitizing tabs or whatever.) Sponges, scrubbies, and dish soap. Dishwashing gloves–remember, you can't get your hands wet–or the nitrile gloves you maybe bought because of the suggestion two before this one. </li><li>WASH your laundry <strong>before</strong> things hit the fan. Like, now. Likewise with your dishes. </li><li>GET a flashlight that isn't your phone–maybe several–and put batteries in 'em. Half the time that I want a flashlight, I also want the use of my phone. </li><li>IF you stock up on a paper product, go with a giant pack of paper towels. An 8- or 10-roll pack should do you; don't give into worry and buy 85 rolls of paper towels. You're better than that. 💕</li></ul><p>I think that's it for now. I know I didn't cover a lot of the "basics"; <em>everyone</em> covers "the basics". This that Real Knowledge® that your local newscaster doesn't get from the AP Wire.</p><p><a href="https://hackers.town/tags/WinterStorm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WinterStorm</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/Snowpocalypse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Snowpocalypse</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/ArcticBlast" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArcticBlast</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/winter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winter</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/StayWarm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>StayWarm</span></a> <a href="https://hackers.town/tags/freeze" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>freeze</span></a></p>
