Tomorrow morning, if the sky is clear, you can see the narrow waning crescent moon next to Mercury, the planet closest to the sun, and the red giant star Antares before sunrise.

Here is the sky as simulated with Stellarium, first with the sun 9° below the horizon and secondly with the sun 6° below the horizon.

The red box shows the field of view with a 100 mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Astrophotography challenge.

The morning of 28 December the waxing, very thin, crescent moon will be very close (maybe even occult in some locations?) to the bright star Antares.

Mercury will be nearby.

This can make for a nice twilight photo in the northern hemisphere, but at very low elevation as twilight is starting. Southern hemisphere observers may be able to take photos in full darkness.

Attached screen shot from planetarium software shows (red wire box) sky coverage with an APS-C sensor and 85mm lens. (135mm lens if using full frame sensor.)
