«Unsere Beamten setzen die europäische Sicherheit und Unabhängigkeit aufs Spiel, nur damit sie weiterhin Microsoft Outlook nutzen können! Das klingt idiotisch, aber so erlebe ich Verwaltungen.»

Das bringt es meiner Meinung nach genau auf den Punkt. Zitat von @bert_hubert im Interview mit @adfichter.

Republik · «Die USA können auf viele Politikermails in Europa zugreifen»By Adrienne Fichter

Whoever owns your data ends up owning you.

It is time to realize that data protection is not just a technical issue, but a fundamental question of personal freedom and self-determination.

By informing ourselves and rethinking our digital habits, we can help to protect our privacy and actively shape our digital future.

Very useful list of European alternatives to US Bigtech (Mar2025):
"There is a growing sentiment that the US shouldn't be relied upon for the technologies that many people and businesses use every day. Lately, the US has been unilaterally cutting off access to critical technologies to European countries, prompting calls for "radical action" to bolster European tech stacks from EU lawmakers."

More from Jonah Aragon

"On March 18, politicians in the Netherlands House of Representatives passed eight motions asking the government to reduce reliance on US tech companies and move to European alternatives. Days before, more than 100 organizations signed an open letter to European officials calling for the continent to become “more technologically independent” and saying the status quo creates “security and reliability risks.”

Two European-based cloud service companies, Exoscale and Elastx, tell WIRED they have seen an uptick in potential customers looking to abandon US cloud providers over the last two weeks—with some already starting to make the jump. Multiple technology advisers say they are having widespread discussions about what it would take to uproot services, data, and systems.

“We have more demand from across Europe,” says Mathias Nöbauer, the CEO of Swiss-based hosting provider Exoscale, adding there has been an increase in new customers seeking to move away from cloud giants. “Some customers were very explicit,” Nöbauer says. “Especially customers from Denmark being very explicit that they want to move away from US hyperscalers because of the US administration and what they said about Greenland.”"

In these uncertain times, it’s crucial to recognize the role of whistleblowers in exposing the truth. From Theranos to Facebook, Uber, Google and OpenAI, their courage has uncovered critical issues within the tech industry.

Whistleblowers will remain essential in holding Big Tech and governments accountable and protecting them is more important than ever.

Lies, Information Spaces, and Changing Minds

The scary thing we are learning is, to our collective horror, we have built up very little institutional or cultural resilience to fascists, specifically their lies and manipulation. The good news is that we are getting a crash course in how to build that resilience, and it can be pretty straightforward.

I think the foundation of democratic resilience is ending bothsides-ism in #media. Once someone demostrates they are untrustworthy, their voice needs to be dismissed outright. As consumers, all of us have the agency to reject sources that rely on both-sidesism and clickbait catastrophizing. This will take time to learn good habits and it involves collective responsibility, but I believe we can do this.

These battles are won in information spaces, and while autocrats have the advantage of corporate mouthpiece control, they have the disadvantage of being grossly incompetent and stupidly cruel. Their 'brand' is technocratic efficiency and objectivity. As crazy as it sounds, a lot of people dont know they are being lied to because of the information spaces they are trapped in and the blinders they have put up. Our pressure on autocrats, pointing out their incompetence, stupidity, and cruelty, needs to be relentless in order to destroy their brand and help people break free of these bubbles.

I know its distressing to see so many fall for outright lies, but people are very capable of changing their minds when they are presented with evidence that touches on their personal experiences. I point back to collective responsibility to win back minds and diligently fight against authoritarian propoganda, as all of us who have used #BigTech or ever believed in 'meritocracy' have helped build this world.

@Tutanota As long as we talk about tech independence or digital #sovereignty primarily in terms of geography and jurisdiction, we will lose as users and as people with rights:

1. Because this narrative can easily be co-opted by antidemocratic, nationalistic forces.

2. It takes away attention from what actually provides us with independence: software #freedom, #interoperability, a power shift away from #bigtech to small, decentralised, ethical tech.

3. It gives praise to entities...

"You can only throw so much money at a problem.

This, more or less, is the line being taken by AI researchers in a recent survey. Asked whether "scaling up" current AI approaches could lead to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), or a general purpose AI that matches or surpasses human cognition, an overwhelming 76 percent of respondents said it was "unlikely" or "very unlikely" to succeed.

Published in a new report, the findings of the survey, which queried 475 AI researchers and was conducted by scientists at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, offer a resounding rebuff to the tech industry's long-preferred method of achieving AI gains — by furnishing generative models, and the data centers that are used to train and run them, with more hardware. Given that AGI is what AI developers all claim to be their end game, it's safe to say that scaling is widely seen as a dead end."

Futurism · Majority of AI Researchers Say Tech Industry Is Pouring Billions Into a Dead EndBy Frank Landymore

I'm an advocate for moving away from #USA based services and let's be honest, even I know it won't be 100% possible wired.com/story/trump-era-digi

#Apple users aside, even for #Android users it's not easy: some apps (e.g banking) are only on Play Store and you need #Google account. also, some products are #Amazon only too

until it changes, IMO better strategy is isolate accounts for US-based services and not use them for sensitive comms
