Twenty six out of 27 EU leaders, including Slovak prime minister Robert Fico, approved a joint statement on Europe’s rearmament and continued aid to Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
Despite flexing muscles at home for weeks ahead of the emergency summit, the pro-Putin Slovak PM did not vote against the summit conclusions, leaving only his equally confused friend, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, to play the role of the bad boy/useful idiot. Before leaving for Brussels, Fico, long blaming Ukraine for cutting off Russian gas transit through its territory, allegedly causing massive financial losses to Slovakia, told Slovak MPs on the parliamentary EU affairs committee that he would veto the conclusions unless they included guarantees for the resumption of Russian gas transit.

#Slovakia populist PM Robert #Fico repeated his country won't provide #Ukraine any military or financial support that would help it fight #Russia. Fico also demanded that an emergency EU summit in Brussels on Thurs agree to a call for an immediate ceasefire, "which is something that President #Zelenskyy & a majority of #EU member states refuse to do." Fico said his country also wants the summit to specifically request Ukraine to reopen the transit of Russian #gas to #Europe.

#Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert #Fico told Russian television on Wednesday he wanted to visit #Moscow for next year's World War Two anniversary and criticised the #EU's approach to the #Ukraine war, in remarks that stirred opposition ire at home.

In his interview with pro-#Kremlin TV commentator Olga #Skabeyeva, Fico said he would like to visit May 9 Victory Day celebrations next year and said Kyiv's plan for peace was no longer viable.

@randahl Robert #Fico, several times Slovakia's average, had to resign after the protests due to the revelation of links to the Italian mafia, and his party's preferences dropped considerably as a result. Three years later, thanks to conspiracies and a leaning towards the far right, he won the elections again, and is holding high percentages, even though a year after the elections he is totally subverting and indebting the country.
