Yes, I know, I’m a little late to the party here. A full day of running language assessments and a five-hour reverse commute will do that. But you know what? For the next two hours and forty minutes, it’s still #FlagDay in #Canada, and I was damn well getting an action shot from our #Toronto balcony before the clock struck midnight here.

But in the face of these threats to our country, we need to go far beyond flag waving or anthem booing. We need to remember the ethical, cultural and democratic values that make us distinctive. And we need to commit to defend those values from all those who would debase them. I have always been a bit suspicious of flag waving and performative displays of patriotism. I don’t think I’ve ever celebrated Flag Day before. And the way far right Covid conspiracy-mongers hijacked our maple leaf made me queasy. Yet, on this 60th anniversary of our beautiful red & white flag, I find myself displaying one in my living room window (for lack of a flag pole.) #FlagDay #Canada #SenateofCanada #Edmonton #yeg

You know when you're playing #pinball on a real vintage machine with the steel balls and flipper buttons and stuff?

And there's that thing where you hit the ball just right and it shoots up between two bumpers, where it bounces back and forth like a machine gun, and the bells are going, and the points counter is mechanically chunking upwards?

That's what happens when you put out a Canadian flag in a snowy blizzard.
